Hi Jolene85, We can help you out but the prices of PC's these days means you can get just as good a deal if you buy a ready-made PC rather than build your own and go through all the stress. My tutor in college had approx 30+ years experience building PC's and he said it's extremely easy to build your own PC and then find out one part isn't compatable as you go to switch it on and then you need to troubleshoot which is the piece of offending hardware. Not trying to put you off, just some advice before you take this task on. 'Bob
Hi jolene85,

I almost agree with Bizarrebob's recommendation with a slight change in what I would do. I suggest you choose a family orientated IT Business in your area, (not a great big department store type of business,) but a store that only deals in selling/repairing/building computers.

Visit with them detailing what you posted in your list of requirements:

  • Surfing the net
  • emails
  • storing all my music lots of it
  • storing all my films lots of them
  • using software programs for example photoshop
  • watching dvd's

Consider any advice they may offer, weigh out the options given to you, get a firm quote for what is finally decided as the system you want them to build, including the time frame taken to deliver.

Make very sure you have a warranty of at least a year in writing, and if it was my choice the OS (operating system chosen would be Windows XP/SP3) installed and up and running with all drivers included making sure you get both OS CD and Driver CD in hand on delivery.

Others will contribute with their suggestions.

Let us know how you go.

kind regards,
Hi jolene85,

I almost agree with tallin's recommendation with a slight change. :P

Building your own computer may just be something you want to do. Follow tallin's suggestions up to the point of ordering the computer. Then order the parts and assemble them yourself.

The up side of this is your local shop will have a pretty good idea on compatibility because you will be buying the same parts they would have assembled. You will also get the satisfaction of building your own computer.

The down side is, and this may be a biggy, you won't get the warranty they would have provided and you will be responsible for those parts if you ruin them.

You will probably end up paying nearly the same price for the parts as you would have paid them for an assembled, warrantied computer.

If your not willing to give up the security of a warranty for the satisfaction of building it yourself - then ignore this post. :D
Or another point of view…

Reply here with your budget, and I'll post a bunch of links with parts for you to purchase.

Then build for yourself. I helped write up a guide here, posted on our sister forums Geeks to Go.

Too many helpers here, methinks!
