So I went looking for a video codec on the internet and apparently the thing I downloaded wasn't what i was looking for because immediately after I installed it, Norton blocked 3 "Suspicious.MH690's" and then detected a trojan horse that it couldn't put a specific name to. It also could not remove the trojan and after a full scan with Norton it said it was still there but unable to be removed for some weird reason. The scan couldn't give me a file path but when i looked into the history one of the "blockings" by norton says the file is Username\local settings\temp\nsw42a.tmp\utility.dll. I think there is multiple trojans, but i don't really know anything ha.

I also did two scans with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, one quickscan and one full C:\ scan which says some stuff was found and removed. Those logs will be at the end after the HijackThis.

Oh and another interesting thing, after I got the trojan I was uninstalling some useless programs to make some space and when I went to delete AIM 6 the uninstallation was blocked and then there was another detected trojan activity, and it happened again and again every time i tried… i dont know how important that is

UPDATE: I ran a scan with Super Anti Spyware and it found somethings i quarantined and then deleted them, i have replaced the old HijackThis log with a newer more recent one from after this scan, as well as the Super Anti Spyware scan results at the bottom.

Thank you.
Hello Sigur

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
It is advisable that you back up your personal data before starting any clean up procedure.

sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to. If you have not resolved your issue and still need assistance, post a new HJT log please as your system may have changed since your original post.

Ken
Thank you for your time.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

There may be more we can't see.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
The ComboFix log was HUGE and posting it in the box passed character number limits. Maybe I did something wrong? It was even too big to upload as a txt file so i had to compress it… but then rar's aren't accepted as uploadable, so i dont really know what to do.

Hello,

Try this tool, it won't remove anything but will give a nice report

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<

Your HJT log looks fine by the way, how is your system running now??
I don't think i'm cured because a fresh full scan by norton shows that there is still a trojan horse that "cannot be removed because its an unsupported file type"

And the whole thing with trying to uninstall AIM 6 is still triggering some sort of trojan horse attack that Norton blocks.

Can you tell me the name of the trojan horse that Norton is blocking?

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
I would tell you what the trojan was called… if I could. Norton simply says "Trojan horse was found, but cannot be removed because of unsupported file type". If I click the provided link for information on the trojan horse it takes me to a generic page about trojans in general, not a specific one. # version=4 # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.56 # OnlineScannerDLLA.dll=1, 0, 0, 51 # OnlineScannerDLLW.dll=1, 0, 0, 51 # OnlineScannerUninstaller.exe=1, 0, 0, 49 # vers_standard_module=3795 (20090123) # vers_arch_module=1.064 (20080214) # vers_adv_heur_module=1.066 (20070917) # EOSSerial=d864d499fef3f7418535d483015496b7 # end=finished # remove_checked=true # unwanted_checked=true # utc_time=2009-01-24 02:11:28 # local_time=2009-01-23 08:11:28 (-0600, Central Standard Time) # country="United States" # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 3 # scanned=620905 # found=0 # scan_time=10595
Hello,

ESET found nothing and its one of the better scanners. Update Norton and run a full scan in Safemode, I am really not sure what its finding, maybe just a leftover file or registry entry.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

After the scan, right click on Norton on the taskbar and disable Auto Protect and uninstall aim6 , when you reboot Norton will enable itself.

How is everything else running?
Alright I was able to uninstall the Aim thing in safe mode, and the scan in safe mode showed everything was clean! So i guess everythings resolved. Thank you!
Thats great, glad things are back to normal

RSIT <—Drag it to the trash

ATF Cleaner <– Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Combofix <—Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
