Yesterday morning I was brousing the net when suddenly norton started poping up boxes trying to stop incoming threats. There must have been 50 to 60 of them. The cpu was at 100 percent and the harddrive was cranking. After about 20 minutes of this the machine rebooted and stayed in a reboot cycle no way to recover. I tried safe mode but that was not working either. I removed the drive and put it in another machine as a slave and ran norton. I found 167 infections and I deleted them. I returned the drive to the original machine and it booted up. I ran norton again and found a few more and deleted them. I ran Ad-ware and found a bunch of stuff and quarentined them. I seem to still have a Hijacker and norton keeps popping up with a threat showing Trojon Horse. I read these posts here and ran Hijack this. I also ran scan with ewudi. Here are the logs.

Bryan M,

Welcome to the forum.

This is one of the most heavily infected computers that I have come accross in awhile, I would strongly urge you to stay off the internet except for posting here because the infections you have are drawing other ones at rapid pace.

We will have to do this one step at a time , there is too much to do all at once. You may want to print this out and keep it handy because we will be off line for most of the fix.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

We need to stop all these services.

App
Command Service
Network Connection Link Manager
Network Monitor
Windows Overlay Components

* Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
* Scroll down to Each service listed in the quote
* Double Click that service to open it.
* Click on Stop Service.
* Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
* OK your way out of the program.

* Close Internet Explorer
* Enter the control panel by clicking on the Start menu, then clicking on Run.
* Now type control in the Open field and press the OK button.
* Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
* Look for and uninstall the following entries if found in the Add/Remove Programs window.

Surf Sidekick
Surf Sidekick 2
Surf Sidekick 3

It may prompt about whether or not you are sure you want to remove this program. Reply Yes to this prompt. It will then uninstall the program.

If there is no Add/Remove Programs entry for this programs, click on Start, then Run and type this
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe /u and press the OK button. A code will be displayed that it will ask you to enter. Enter this code and reboot. Once back to your desktop continue
with the rest of the fix.

Please download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from one of the following locations:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip or
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/Qoofix.zip

1. Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix.
2. Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
3. Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
4. If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open Windows, check these entries and click on Fix Checked.

I had been working on repairing this computer all day yesterday and most of what you suggested I had already removed. Of the items you wanted me to remove, O23 - Service: Service (App) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe (file missing) will not delete using HJT. Also I was unsuccessful at deleting C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmkv32.dll.

Thanks for the input and help. Please let me know what the next step is.

Bryan
Hello Bryan :D

Things a looking up, :thumbup: most of the bad stuff is gone, just a few leftover issues to take care of

Go to this site http://virusscan.jotti.org/ up on the top of the page, use the browse feature and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmkv32.dll. Then click on Submit, you will get a report back, paste it into your next reply.

Also navigate to that file using windows explorer and right click on it and let me know the origin of that file.

Open HJT Scan Only and remove this entry
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

You have Ewido installed, set it up this way, update it and run the scan in Safemode and be sure to let me see the report.

  • Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close Ewido

Run this system cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Let me see the report from Jotti, the Ewido report and a new HJT log please.

Bryan,

No problem Bryan, my pleasure.

And by the way Ken, I realy do appreciate your time in helping me with this.

Domain = CCI-2.com <– Do you know anything about this domain???

Open HJT Scan Only and remove both these entries.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmkv32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmkv32.dll
O23 - Service: Service (App) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe (file missing)

Make sure that you still have windows enabled to show all files and folders and boot into Safemode, look for and delete these files.

Read this file closely…its service.exe and not the legit file services.exe There is no S on the bad file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmkv32.dll

Boot normally, post a new HJT log, let me know about that domain and also let me know how your system is running now.
This computer is a member of CCI-2 domain.
I ran HTS but could not remove
O23 - Service: Service (App) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe (file missing)
I went to safemode and could not find service.exe but did find winmkv32.dll but it would not let me delete it. It said it was in use. I booted with xp cd disk in to recovery console and removed it that way.

When I got here this afternoon there were many Norton windows showing many different threats. The names of these were Trojan Horse, Jrojan Dialer and Downloader. Ewido also had some malware windows with these same threats it said it quarenteened them. Below is the newest HJT log.

Thanks,

Bryan,

Open HJT > Misc Tools > Process Manager and look for C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe (Not C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe )

Service.exe <– This is bad
Services.exe <–Legit windows file DO NOT KILL OR DELETE THIS

When you find C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe ….Click on Kill Process.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe

Highlight the file with the complete path in the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.
  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes

Then if this line is still present in HJT, fix it.

O23 - Service: Service (App) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe (file missing)

Post a new log please.
Ok, I could not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe HJT Process Manager.
I tried to run Killbox a few times with the C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe line but it keep coming back with a window that says "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" I am assuming this means it can't find the file. I did a search of my hard drive for service.exe and found nothing. I ran HJT in safemode and tried to fix O23 - Service: Service (App) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe (file missing) but it still would not go away. In safemode i ran REGEDIT and did a search for service.exe and sound two entries and deleted them both. I have rebooted in normal mode and here is the HJT log. Oh ya, over the weekend I ran a program called Spy Sweeper and it found a bunch of stuff and quarentined them.

The system seems to be running ok. I left it on all last night and when I came in this morning there were no Norton windows up. This is the first time in a long time that there were not these Norton windows.

Thanks,
Bryan
Bryan :D

Your always one step ahead of me :D Your log looks good :thumbup:

I guess you can see how easy it is to get infected with this garbage.

Spysweeper is a trial and a great program, one of the best available, but it does use some system resources so if you dont plan on purchasing it, I would remove it via the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel.

Ewido is also a trial, but you can keep it after the 30 days, you will still be able to check for updates, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Every User on this Computer Local Settings
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder <–Just the contents, not the folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder <– But not the temp folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder. <–But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
