:wavey: Norton anti virus identifies i have a trojan horse in c:\windows\system32\req.dll but it cannot quarantine or delete it. After following nortons list of instructions of scanning in safe mode to no avail (i receive an error message regarding the symantec integrator and it will not launch) i heard about hijackthis. I run a 'fix' on c:\windows\system32\req.dll and it says it has deleted it and the registry entries but as soon as I reboot the computer my norton antivirus message comes back and the file is still there. Could it be that the trojan is in the startup process and what can I do about it please? :weee:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I'm at work right now, but you can do the below and I'll look at your log when I get home.

Then download this program.

http://downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe

Open the program and click the "Run Locate.com" button.
Then click the "Compare" button (this will take a few minutes)
When it finishes click the "Make Log…." button.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

If you don't know how to start in Safe Mode, clink HERE

We also need to "Show hidden files and folders." click HERE to learn how to:

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\msagent\apdos.dll

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for all your help so far. I've done all recommended actions. Hit a problem though, as even in safe mode I was unable to delete the file c:\WINDOWS\msagent\apdos.dll It generated a message saying that the file was in use by another program or person. I was the only user and had no programs running that I was aware of. I tried doing everything both with Norton antivirus on and off as the only window i can't close in normal mode is the one telling me i have the virus. It made no difference to me being able to delete apdos.dll.

Download Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.175
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.
Copy these instructions into a new text document and leave it open.
Close all unnecessary program's including the Internet connection and all browsers.
Start Killbox, Lower down near the yellow triangle use the drop-down to end each rundll32.exe process.
There can be several end each of them.. use the drop-down again to end the Explorer.exe process.
Your desktop will disappear, thats OK.
Next:
Using standard file kill.(default settings).
Copy this whole list into the windows clipboard, all the Bolded below.

C:\WINDOWS\msagent\apdos.dll

Back in Killbox go > file > paste from clipboard,
Click the red highlighted X button and say yes to the prompt., wait until a success message appears.
Continue hitting the red button until all files in the list have been deleted.

Now go tools "start explorer shell".

When finished exit Killbox.

You will need to reset your quick-launch toolbar, to do that first right click on the windows taskbar,
in the context menu > toolbars > and uncheck quick-launch, repeat until all are unchecked, now you can again place a check next to it and re-arrange the windows taskbar to your preferences.
Still no joy I'm afraid. There were no rundll.exe files visible but when I tried to end explorer.exe about five windows opened up saying 'access denied' to rundll.exe files. I had to 'ok' all of these boxes but then continued anyway. I pasted the file path c:\WINDOWS\msagent\apdos.dll into the box as instructed, but a message came up that it could not be deleted. Please advise further. Many many thanks, Paula
Be sure that all windows are closed. Click on START-> RUN. Copy paste the following as it is and click OK.

regsvr32.exe /U apdos.dll

You should get a message that it has been uninstalled succesfully.

Then be sure that all windows are still closed. Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, just start the program button. .Put a check mark on these entries.Hit FIX CHEKED button.

Dear LDTate, Thanks so much for all your help. However since my last post I have successfully run a removal tool from the symantec website which has removed the trojan.vundo.b. Thanks again. Paula.
