As the title decscribes I'm getting screen flicker when I starup the computer and when I open new programs. I've installed the display drivers from Nvidia ( they make the on-board graphics chip ) and used DELL's tech support as far as they can take without me doing a wipe of the HDD with the restore discs.

A little background; My kids ages 14, 12, 11 used this sytem regularly until Xmas 08 when they were each given a laptop to do with as they wished. In the process of trying to uninstall games and other files they had on here I kept having problems getting the uninstaller to work. Here's the post http://forums.whatthetech.com/Windows_Unin…ork_t98918.html.

This is really starting to annoy me to no end. By the way, Nvidia support believes there may be a keylogger hidden on here somewhere. The tech I've dealt with says that this type of screen flicker conflicts with their drivers and it usually means just that. No info fron them on how to remove it if that's true. :(

If anyone can make sense of this please help. I'm desperate!

I think I made a mistake and uploaded that log as an attachment. :smack: Forgive me for my error. Here's the log pasted as instructed;

Again, sorry for the the file attachment. I hope I've got everything right that someone may need.
I have a new wrinkle upon my forehead this am! I've downloaded and run the ERUNT program before I used Hijackthis v2. Got the copy of the registry set aside as instructed and posted the registry log yesterday above. Now the fun part; I booted up the computer thia am and I get the error messages from ERUNT telling me that several things could not be copied and no backup registry would be created. :o ! Don't know what that's all about or if these 2 issues are related, but maybe one of you nice folks can begin to unravel this mystery. I'm thoroughly confused.
Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.
That's not a problem with the delay in your response. I understand you are busy. I also appreciate your time. All that aside; The computer still has the flicker and other symptoms described above. Nothing new beyond the hassles listed. Here's the posts you wanted. I hope it put in here the correct way this time. If I don't then please forgive me. Hi,

Nothing baddies showing on the surface. Let's look a little deeper just to make sure but I will most probably be sending you back into the capable hands of Doug and the Tech Team with the "All Clear".

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Thanks.
Ok, I've got a big update for you.
I went out and bought some upgrades for this computer so my son could run the game Spore on it. Here's what I got; 2 GB of DDR2 SDRAM and an Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT 1 GB card.
It took some time and few phone calls for me to get everything up and running, but now this machine is blazingly fast and the screen flicker is gone! :woot:
I'm posting a new log to let you take a gander at and see if all is well. By the way, my son loaded up Spore and showed me it running at 52 frames per second. I guess thats good right? All I know is the flicker is gone.

Just so you know also; If not for you fine folks here at this site I never would've thought about upgrading this machine. I definitely would never have taken the case off and added stuff to it! I had visions of destruction with my big meat hook hands mucking around in there. But you folks gave me the confidence to do it and have showed me there's nothing to fear. I salute you. :notworthy:
