Pentium III Windows 98

Two issues…1) complete removal of adstatus and 2) freeing up the screen saver in display\control panel. (I believe this will keep the screen from freezing after being left on or accessing screen saver.)

I am trying to help my neighbor with their computer which has been running slowly. I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware and removed a large number of spyware. I also ran Norton antivirus and it was clean. The only spyware folder I initially couldn't remove was Adstatus. I did eventually through the control panel. I also removed C:\Program Files\Windows AdStatus\WinStat.exe by running regedit. I did not show the hidden files so I might still have something. After rebooting I still could not change my screen saver screen as when I open it up in the control panel the computer freezes. Everything else seems to work. I need to make changes here as when the computer is left on, in 45 minutes it will shut off and freeze as it is set that way.

I think it might have something to do with adstatus. I am posting a log and hope someone can help with it.

Thanks…

Hello pop42, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are still looking for help, please follow these directions.

1) C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\HIJACKTHIS.EXE: Your HJT.exe needs a permanent folder to save backups and logs in. If you wish to run it from C:\Windows then point your mouse at a blank spot and make a NEW FOLDER. Call it HJT and move the HJT.EXE from the TEMP folder into the new folder. It will look like this: C:\Windows\HJT\HJT.exe. Now you can delete the contents of that Temp folder (NOT THE FOLDER) just the contents. Thanks.

2) I would like to remove the aol toolbar, if you must have it, pass over this item in the instructions.

3) Can't tell if you have a running firewall installed. If you need a free one, let me know.

4) This is a baddie, take a look in the link:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AP9H4QMO.EXE

5) Open Task Manager (Ctrl, Alt, Delete at the same time) locate and end process on this item:
AP9H4QMO.EXE (could be called something else, you just read the other names it might be)

6) Scan with HijackThis and check the box in front of these line items:

Thanks for the help pskelley. I did what you said and everything seems to work ok wxcept for the screen saver problem. I tried to correct it in the control panel under power management to set both the monitor and the hard drive to NEVER shut off but it still happens. The problem also still exists when I go to control panel, Display, screen saver. The computer freezes up and I can't get a task manager or anything, I have to to restart the computer. Could this be a monitor issue? Everything else works fine.

I am posting a new log for you to look at.

Thanks again, pop42

Hello pop 42, Please do not use the quote function to post the information I leave for you again. I can see the information. All you need to do is type your comments and copy/paste your log. Makes it very hard for me to use the thread. Thanks.

Concerning the screensaver, they are nothing but resource wasters and are not longer required on computers. I suggest you uninstall it or at least turn it of. If you recently downloaded the screensaver from the internet, this could very well be the source of your malware infection. Many online screensavers come along with a load of malware when you download them. I suggest you do not.

Next, let me say that I am here to remove the malware on your computer and try to give you advice about how to keep it off. I am not technical support. Once we remove the malware I may be able to direct you to where you can get help. Your log looks clean of malware. I first wish to give you this information which will help you to stay clean.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html

Now I will try to help a little with other issues. If you will provide me with more information about your computer, like the brand and model number I may be able to direct you to where you can get some free support from online forums as I doubt tech support where you purchased the computer will help anymore. How old is the computer. Do you run your maintanence on a regular basis. There are so many things that could cause your issue, post some information and I may be able to direct you.
Thanks…pskelley

pskelley Thanks very much for all your help. I will look at the other forums you suggested. I will also look for the latest screen savers that might have been added to see if I can delete them. Thanks again for the help. pop42
