Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I copied and pasted the commands you indicated and then ran a HJT system scan only. None of the service you've identified below were running. Is it possible I sent you the wrong HJT Logfile in the last post? I looked for the folders you indicated, couldn't find any to delete. I then rebooted and ran a new HJT log file and it is pasted below. My computer seems to be responding properly and running as expected. Same issue exists with the Windows Installer message. I do still see Symantec on my C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs folder for all users and my user account. Thanks.

None of the Symantec programs are running so lets not worry about that.

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
LDTate, I really appreciate your assistance in cleaning up this laptop. I'll be happy to make a PayPay donation later this evening. I ran ComboFix /u, cleaned up the laptop and uninstalled the application. I went down your IE checklist and had almost all of them ticked that you indicated and ticked the one I did not have ticked. I updated the avast! virus definition and will keep it updated, have a firewall enabled, downloaded and installed WinPatrol, downloaded and installed the MVPS hosts file and applied the latest Windows patches. Have I missed anything? Any suggestions to replace the Windows firewall? Thanks for all of your help. I suppose I will now need to run some tests on my kid's and wife's computer. I have to think that they are loaded with questionable stuff. Jim :woot:

I suppose I will now need to run some tests on my kid's and wife's computer. I have to think that they are loaded with questionable stuff.

Let me know if you need to post a HijackThis log for them. Start a new topic if you do and let me know.
Thanks for your help. I've scanned both computers and deleted the files that were identified. I'll post HJT file logs for both, with details, later this evening. For what it is worth the MVPS Host replacement file seemed to slow the computer down a bit and requires multiple clicks of the "back" button, it kind of puts a crimp in the navigation experience with IE. I think I might opt not to use that as part of the solution.

That's fine. Start a new topic for each and put something like Computer number 2 so the other team members don't think you are double posting.
