Hi, I'm trying to fix my mom-in-laws computer and there are a couple issues. Her Firefox works great, but she is unable to run her IE. It comes up with a "about.blank" heading. Occasionally it will upload for a split second and then come up with a windows error report request. She needs the IE for a couple things. I've tried to download new explorers (6) and drop down to previous ones and none of this works. She has Windows ME which runs very quickly besides these issue. Thanks for the help.
PS- I am also having trouble downloading her printer software (hp psc 750). It completes the download, but only produces a "read me" file and says it cannot locate the software to finish the download. These two things may be related?
It appears that HP does not supply a Driver for Windows ME in their online resource.
If your mother has previously had the HP printer installed with her machine, she may have the Driver on a CD?
Windows ME leaves a whole lot to be desired, particularly when using the computer online.
To the best of my limited knowledge, only a few older-versions of Firewalls will function on Windows ME.
And various of the AntiVirus utilities will either not install or provide limited protection.
If there is any way possible and practical, I would certainly recommend upgrading to at least Windows 2000 which is still receiving critical updates and patches from MS. Otherwise, there is a bit longer period available in the life-span of Windows XP if an upgrade is possible for her.
Both upgrading to Windows 2000 and Windows XP would be a cost item, and best to accomplish as a fresh installation after reviewing the suitability of the machine for such an upgrade.
Sorry this isn't better news.
I'll move this over to the Windows Forum in case others might have some ideas to offer.
Hello,
Since this machine is running ME I would think that it has limited hardware resources (RAM, Processor.)
Before you put any money in to it you may wish to concider the cost of a new compter.
There are mid-grade computers for $400.00 on up.
Putting $100.00+ in to this machine would not be cost effective.
