I apologize that I took a while returning back from my last post.. the last thread was subsequently closed:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/virus_trojan_help_t97414.html

I tried following your advice, and got up to the point of running the Kaspersky scan. Like most of the rest of the virus scans I have tried (except AVG), it timed out and froze the program after a while. I don't know what is causing this, but it seems that almost all malware scans hit a file or something, preventing the scan from continuing, and the program effectively times out or freezes.

Anything that I'm missing? Is there some setting that I need to change, or file to delete, before I can run these properly?

And thank you for the tip on Java. I didn't realize that the old versions remained after the updates. You helped me free up half a gig on my disk!

Thank you for your assistance thus far. I'd greatly appreciate your continued assistance if possible.

Hi,

Please try this scan instead.

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post, along with a new HijackThis log.
Post a new HijackThis log as well.

Thanks.
First off, thank you for your continued assistance.

I ran the ESET scan, and it completed. It said it found one item. The log file is below:

Anything stand out that needs to be fixed?

Thank you once again for everything!

Phill
Things are looking good, have you got any more problems?

You need to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3. Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install Windows XP - Service Pack 3.

Thanks.
Well, i think everything is running a lot faster so far! and since i've been following your advice, i havent been getting any pop ups! awesome! Now, i tried running the site, to upgrade to SP3. First, i didn't have enough HD space to finish the install. So i went back and deleted a ton of files and programs (mostly games) that i havent played since college. Now, i cant get the site to install SP3.. it keeps giving me an error, that the site can't perform the task. I'll reboot, and try again. If that doesnt work, I'll try and let my auto update do it's thing tonight. Any advice on the virus that came up in the last scan? Also, when i was in my control panel uninstalling stuff, i saw "Wildtangent Control Panel". It's been my understanding that WildTangent is a cause of a lot of problems, and a real pain to remove. What are your thoughts? Should I go after these two items? At the least, id like to remove Wildtangent, but its not in the Add/Remove list, and i cant delete the file… Thank you once again! you are really helpin me out with this! Phill
Hi.

About the Virus that ESET found - give ATF-Cleaner another run, that should get it. May also help with the Windows Update issue.

If you don't use WildTangent for any Games then you can remove it. Have a look and see if this article helps you:
http://www.pchell.com./support/wildtangent.shtml
You can skip the Add/Remove instructions if you don't have it there.

Let me know if you are still having problems installing SP3.

Thanks.
Ran ATF Cleaner, and got rid of WildTangent. Everything seems cool now! I'm still working on getting SP3… I changed my autoupdate to download it tonight (I had it scheduled to look for new updates every Sunday). This has been a huge help! Thank you very much for all of your assistance! Phill
Hi,

Log looks good

You can now delete any other tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.

If you still have problems updating to SP3 let me know, or post in out Windows forum for Tech assistance.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

Now that your system appears to be clean, theres just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • System restore:
We will now clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
Make sure you do this now, as your System Restore currently has infected files in it.

  • You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
    1) Comodo
    2) Agnitum
    3) Sunbelt/Kerio

  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • Use Mozilla Firefox or Opera as your internet browser.
These are more secure than Internet Explorer and can be downloaded for free from here:
    Download Mozilla FireFox
    Download Opera
Alternatively, update your Internet Explorer to version 7, as this is more secure that your current version.
  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
