Java-driven virus?

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

After running AVG, it found a series of java applets (can't remember the name) which I then read about. It seems they allow for trojans to install themselves through java applications. I followed instructions to remove this by clearing the java cache but I feel there's probably still something on my system. I don't know if it helps but I also included the AVG log of the scan below which indicates that AVG wasn't able to clean the problem.

Can someone please respond to this? Is there something I need to do to properly request a response? It seems I always have to re-submitmy requests here after the 5 day period passes.
THANK YOU!!!

Hi tinpanalley,

Your logs appear to be clean. Kapersky shows all the infected items quarantined by Norton and thus are no threat. You may want to permanently delete the itmes out of quarantine. Instructions are at the following:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n…000041213443506

Be sure to update your Java though.

STEP 1.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 2.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Updating Java
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_10-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

Susan
Thanks Susan, I don't understand though. I still get weird lags on Friefox, my email, certain pages. And I'm seeing popups where there weren't any before. And I have so many things installed to protect myself. Running all the time: - AVG Free - Sygate's Personal Firewall - WinPatrol - SpywareBlaster (Should I have SpywareGuard installed as well?) Run manually every few days: - AdAware SE - scans every few days - Spybot Search And Destroy - scans every few days - CCleaner - once in a while Should I pay for some virus software? Is there a benefit to getting the paid AVG? THanks
One more thing, Susan, I don't even have Norton installed anymore. That was removed like a year ago. So, I can't open Norton to remove those quarantined items. Any suggestions?
Let's not concern ourselves with the quarantined files now since they should not be causing any problem.

SpywareBlaster is different from anti-spyware applications though. It adds known bad sites to your restricted zones so it is offers additional protection features.

I use the free Google's pop-up blocker and Mozilla Firefox. There is also an option for Mozilla under SpywareBlaster to prevent ad or tracking cookies and I have that checked. I do not have problems with pop-ups –knock on wood!

I would suggest trying the SpywareBlaster and the Google pop-up blocker.

Let's see if anything shows up with Combofix.

Combofix
  • Download this file - combofix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the ComboFix log and a new hijackthis log. Also let me know about the pop-ups.

Did you see my previous post where I mentioned what I had on my system? I've got Spyware Blaster. —————————————————— Running all the time: - AVG Free - Sygate's Personal Firewall - WinPatrol - SpywareBlaster Run manually every few days: - AdAware SE - scans every few days - Spybot Search And Destroy - scans every few days - CCleaner - once in a while Should I pay for some virus software? Is there a benefit to getting the paid AVG? ——————————————————- Ayway, pop-ups do still happen but only when I access certain sites. As far as Google pop-up blocker goes, I'm already using Firefox and I'm not a big "Google-products" fan. I don't trust that there aren't certain Google-affiliated sites that they won't block. But in regard to my previous question, is it worth it to pay for the paid version of AVG? Is there a better Virus software out there? How's Avast?

- SpywareBlaster (Should I have SpywareGuard installed as well?)

Ok I see your remark about SpywareBlaster.

But in regard to my previous question, is it worth it to pay for the paid version of AVG? Is there a better Virus software out there? How's Avast?

You were complaining about pop-ups- I do not think the anti-virus software choice will make a difference here.

I really do not know enough to be able to compare anti-virus software and recommend one over the other.
But I do know that how your use your computer will also determine how susceptible you are to becoming infected. I try to make sure that person has anti-virus application, firewall application, keeps up-to-date on security patches (Windows Updates, Java versions), etc.

Here is that quote again which warns about clicking on links, attachments, etc. The point here is not to be over-confident with having security applications installed.

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Sorry I am not much help here answering your question. You might want to post your questions in an anti-virus forum where someone may know more about the various applications.
No, no, don't be silly, you've been a huge help. THank you. Everything seems fine again. Although there were popups, it was the virus in Java this time that caused me to write in. Do you know if I'm going to be able to find a way to delete those old Norton quarantined files so I don't have to worry about them? It can't be good to hang on to them.
What happens if you go into Safe mode and delete the "Norton AntiVirus" folder? If you cannot what message do you obtain?

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Ok, I deleted the Norton stuff. Now, something else strange has happened. Every now and then, my system resources go way up to 100% and my system basically freezes. This was followed by losing all my Firefox bookmarks. At one point, when I had to terminate a program with the task manager and it asked me to send an error report, it told me I needed an active connection to the internet. Obviously I had one, so i found that odd. I think there's still something in my system. Any ideas?
