Hi Gringo

As requested, here's the latest log file. My sister's also asked me to pass on her deepest thanks for your help in getting her PC back to a working state again - think she was approaching the sledge hammer stage!

Hopefully this one's the all clear!

Cheers

Buggyman

Hello Buggyman

Yes looking alot better!

This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are

:remove tools:
  • Let's clear out the programmes we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:Set correct settings for files:
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

:clear system restore points:
  • This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:

please visit this page that gives instructions to do this
http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

:Turn On Automatic Updates:

Turn On Automatic Updates
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:
  • you have a couple of good antispyware programs on this computer but you still can try some of these others to see if you like them also

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer.

Consider a custom hosts file
Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Now you have followed my advice - it's time to lodge a complaint against what you have suffered………

If you were infected …. Stand Up and be Counted.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can then be closed.

Gringo
Hi Gringo Haven't had a chance to get round to my sister's over the last couple of days but I'm hoping to have an update for you by Tuesday at the latest. Cheers Buggyman
Hi Gringo Finally got around to trying the final clean up. Sadly OTCleanit seems to do a great job of removing itself and Flash player, but nothing else. All the other programs we've installed are still there and the PC's back to running pretty slow again. I suspect however that this is more due to Talk Talk's security suite than anything else. We're looking at the possibility of getting the Talk Talk suite removed and reverting back to free av and firewall programs which have been used with no problem before with the system to see if this has any effect. In general, the feedback on Talk Talk seems to indicate that their packages can sometimes cause this type of problem. Sadly, we need to get them to uninstall it for us. Gits. Still, do you want me to go ahead with the rest of the clean up instructions or is there a certain order to uninstall the various tools we've installed in? Cheers Buggyman
Hello buggyman

Finally got around to trying the final clean up. Sadly OTCleanit seems to do a great job of removing itself and Flash player, but nothing else. All the other programs we've installed are still there

in your case there is not much it would have cleaned

and the PC's back to running pretty slow again

let me have another hijackthis scan and did you install anything since our last post?

Gringo
Hello

five day bump

It has been five days since my last post.

  • do you still need help with this?
  • do you need more time?
  • are you having problems following my instructions?
  • if after 48hrs you have not replied to this thread then it will have to be closed!

Gringo
Hi Gringo Sorry for the delay again. I'm trying to get the Talk Talk package switched off as it seems more and more like this is the root of most of the problems that the PC now has. Nothing else has been installed since the previous posts, so it's unlikely that there is any other issue going on that you haven't already picked up on. I'm hoping to get the Talk Talk matter resolved before the weekend, so if you could give me until Saturday or Sunday it would be greatfully appreciated. Hopefully at that point we can mark this one off as closed. Many thanks Buggyman
Hi Gringo

Thanks for waiting on me. We had a spot of bother running the last clean-up instructions, but it turns out that this was mainly due to a problem with the Tea Timer in Spybot. After another couple of reboots and some more file deletions from Spybot, the PC looks like it's finally behaving. The PC is running ok…..start up is not bad (well the reboots came back up pretty quick) so I reckon it's maybe these last few hangers on that have been causing a problem…..possibly in conjunction with TalkTalk security too.

We're still going to look into getting Talk Talk disabled as both myself and my sister have been running free apps on our PC's for years and never had any problem with them. Sadly the same can't be said abotu Talk Talk Security!

Anyway, here's the latest log file. Have a look and let me know what you think.

Cheers

Buggyman

Hello buggyman your logs are looking clean, you say you want to disable Talk/talk. I have never used it but if you look at your running proccess you will see seventeen proccess just for that one program, that is alot of resources being used for one program. there is a good chance that that is part of the slowdown you are talking about. Running processes: C:\Program Files\TalkTalk\bin\sprtcmd.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Common\FSM32.EXE C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Anti-Virus\fsgk32st.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Anti-Virus\FSGK32.EXE C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Common\FSMA32.EXE C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Common\FSMB32.EXE C:\Program Files\TalkTalk\bin\sprtsvc.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Common\FCH32.EXE C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Common\FAMEH32.EXE C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Anti-Virus\fsqh.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\FSPC\fspc.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\FSGUI\fsguidll.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\FWES\Program\fsdfwd.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Anti-Virus\fssm32.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\FSAUA\program\fsaua.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\FSAUA\program\fsus.exe C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Anti-Virus\fsav32.exe if there ia anything i can help you with just let me know gringo
Hi Gringo Many thanks for all your help - I think without your assistance the PC would have ended up being reformatted, which I hate doing unless it's absolutely necessary! Your advice and guidance has been invaluable and has given my sister back the use of her PC again, for which she's asked me to pass on her sincerest thanks. I think both myself and my sister have learned a lot from this experience and she's determined to get rid of Talk Talk now - and at 16 running processes I'd be very much inclined to agree - that's almost as much as Norton System Works! Anyway, time to go and make sure we follow all your suggestions about keeping her PC (and my own!) clean in the future. Keep up the good work - the world's a safer and brighter place with people like yourself in it. Many thanks again Buggyman :notworthy: :wavey:
