I have a Windows XP desktop machine that takes a really long time to boot up. Windows will start, and display the desktop for about 7 minutes before showing the task bar and desktop icons.

I've run Avast boot-time scans which removed ~80 viruses, I've run Spybot S&D, RougeRemover, ComboFix, and SDFix – all to no avail. I also ran Rootkit Revealer which found 25 possible rootkits, but when I told the program to save a log file, it would lock up and crash before actually writing the .txt file.

Anyway, here's a HJT log file. Thanks to anyone who helps!!

OKOMXOGHi , welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
Hi Ben33434,

Sorry about the random letters at the begining of the last post.

You have 2 antivirus programs installed. They will conflict and cause some of the problems you are experiencing. Please uninstall 1 of them then continue with the rest of the instructions.

———————————————

Extra note: If you chose to uninstall Norton (Symantec) the removal tool and instructions can be found HERE

Also if you uninstall Norton, please enable the windows Firewall
  • Click Start.
  • Click Run.
  • Type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click On (recommended).
  • Click OK

———————————–

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows). Post that in your next reply.
We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following mirrors:
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Unzip the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Double click [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push [external image: Posted Image] and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Download and save to your desktop, RSIT by random/random
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)
Note: These logs will open in notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.

Thanks
