Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16735)
Boot mode: Normal

I have a couple issues;

First, I am trying to upgrade from Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 to 9. I get to a certain point, and I get an error message telling me my administrator set permissions so that I am forbidden to install. I am the administrator, and sole user of this PC. I tried doing the install in safe mode, logged in as administrator, but got the same error message. CARUMBA!!!!

Second issue, I recently installed XP SP3, because of an issue I had with my old XP. This version is missing the left context menu in folders.
You will see from this image, that the left menu is missing, ie. View as a slide show, delete, Move to etc.

Hi watcherduck,

Did you pay for your Adobe Pro 8.0? As it says Pro I am not sure….

If you did not I would uninstall it as it is a resource hogger, and download and install Foxit which is a much smaller program and does almost the very same thing for you. Of course this depends what your needs are.

If you are interested in installing Foxit Reader, here you can manually remove Adobe Professional from your Add and Remove utility.

Regarding your screen shot, I cannot read it at all to be honest. Suggest you try the following

  • Open My Documents folder
  • Tools
  • Folder Options
  • Enable 'Show common tasks in folders'
See if that works for you - You can also select other options while you are within the Folder Options if you want.

kind regards,
The folders view worked. I feel kinda stoopid for that one. Yes, The Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional Extended is for my business. I already uninstalled the version 8, so not to interfere with the installation of 9. I know it's a resource hog, but it sure does some cool stuff that impresses my clients. Is there some "Permissions" panel that I can give myself permission on? I have such a panel on my website, but I can't find one on my computer. Thanks for your help.
Hi Watcherduck,

Is there some "Permissions" panel that I can give myself permission on? I have such a panel on my website, but I can't find one on my computer.

Please expand on what area of permissions you are seeking here?

I understand about Adobe, thought you may need it for your business purposes.

Glad you got your folder tasks back. Nothing is "stoopid" as you said, we all have to learn. The only question that is stupid is the one not asked of us.

Best regards,
Well, when I try to install the acrobat 9 pro, It loads all of the cabs and stuff, then asks me what language I want. When I click on English, I get an error message telling me that my administrator has set it so that I do not have the required permissions to install the acrobat 9. I re-booted into safe, and right clicked on the program files folder, and gave myself Full Control of the folder and all sub folders. I tried installing once again, and got the same message, I do not have the permissions required to install. Now whenever I right click on any folder, the Microsoft installer window comes up and asks me for the file path to Acrobat 9 msi. I browse it to the path, but it can't see it apparently, and I have to cancel the Microsoft installer. I have your uninstaller 2008, which I like to use for uninstalls, because after the software's uninstall runs, Your Uninstaller cleans up all the registry keys and bits left behind. I uninstalled Acrobat 8 with it, so there shouldn't be a conflict with it.
This may be a malware issue. I suggest that you first go to the malware forums here, and after getting a clean bill of health come back to this post if you are still having issues.
I scanned with several utilities, with 0 infections found. I will check it in the malware forums after I feel safe online with it. I have a lot of valuable stuff on my computer.

I think the malware is that virus known as Microsoft Update SP3. I never downloaded it, but it came with the disc I installed recently. What it looks like to me, is that Microsoft installer is trying to install Acrobat pro, because every time I right-click on something, I get a window of Microsoft installer asking me where Acrobat 9 pro.msi is. Even though Adobe uses it's own installer, the Microsoft installer is trying to do the same thing at the same time. The 'Permissions' issue is actually a conflict of interests.

Is there a way to get Microsoft installer to ignore the installation? I am afraid that if I uninstall msi, and install using the adobe installer, when I reinstall msi, it will pick right up where it left off, and whenever I right click on something, the installer will open again.

Can't these giants just get along? Is it too early in the morning for me to be posting?
Try to install 8, and then install 9. There should not be a conflict here between Windows and Adobe. If this is not malware related then something is corrupt. Try to update or reinstll the Windows installer.
