Shutdown Problem

Compaq Presario 5221 desktop Intel 300mb ram 10year old.Since updating to windows xp pro, will not switch off automatically.Goes to "it is now safe to switch off your computer" and has to be switched off using (front) button.This happened initially after installing win xp. Jeru
