1) My computer has been running well until last week and is now running very slowly especially when first booted up. For the first hour, sometimes longer I have to wait and wait for webpages to load, often timing out. I also have to wait and wait for Outlook to open, then the first few messages I try to open, I’m waiting up to 30 seconds for the message to open. This is happening daily now. Meanwhile another (wireless) computer in the house are running fine, so I know it’s not my internet connection.

2) Immediately on booting the screen freezes and I can’t get into anything. Even doing a Ctrl/Alt/Delete doesn’t work and I have to do a cold re-boot. I often have to reboot three times before it starts working better. Notice I said better and not working well, as I’m having to wait and wait for the screens to change. When it freezes, there’s a green square in the sys tray telling me my CPU usage is 100% and I’ve just booted up, and not opened one screen or program.

3) It’s also taking 11 minutes to shut down the computer and reboot – both shutting down and booting used to be much faster.

All three started about the same time and I’m wondering if you can detect if something is bogging my system down?

Have done a disk clean up
I did a defrag about 6 weeks ago and when I do the anyalize test I’m told there’s no need to degfrag

I use CA anti virus and have clear scans
I have run Adaware

Before I posted here, I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy.

It reports [SBI $96A49E31] Program Directory
When I repair, I get an error message saying it cannot be cleaned until the computer is rebooted. I let it scan when I rebooted and after an hour and a half I still get the same message, so Spybot S&D is not cleaning it.

Since installing Spybot S&D, the above problems have become magnified and now when I click on the icon to open IE or a program nothing happens. I can only get a webpage to display by going into my e-mail (after many clicks of that icon) and clicking in a link from inside the message, only then can I navigate within the net, as long as I keep one window open. I’ve cleaned my mouse with no difference.

Over to you.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for answering so quickly.

First of all I must tell you, my problems kept getting worse between my first post and last evening. My screens kept freezing and my whole computer was locked up. I couldn’t shut down at all. From the shut down button, I kept getting “end task” boxes for IE, I’d end task and get another one and it kept going on and on and on as if it was in a loop. I finally had to do a cold shut down. This was happening every time I wanted to shut down the computer. This hadn’t happened before I installed Spybot S&D so I uninstalled it and also went back to a restore point prior to installing Spybot and at least I can use my PC now. So you will note my logs may have changed from my first one. I’m sorry I didn’t think to do another Highjack scan before I started your instructions.

You ask:
Why 12 browser pages open at the same time? I didn’t – well I wasn’t aware of it anyway. I am a wife and mom and doooo mulitask but I'm no superwoman! :pullhair: I do multi task, but never have that many windows open at the same time, 3 at the most and e-mail, but never 12. - or at least I never have had that many active window tabs at the bottom of my screen indicating open windows. This is very strange.

BUT now you’ve mentioned it, in my first post, I mentioned I had problems opening webpages. I would click on the blue IE icon, it would be highlighted for a few seconds and the minute minder cursor would appear, but no screen opened and suddenly the timer disappeared and the icon was no longer highlighted – nothing happened. I would repeat and yes repeat this several times and never be able to open a webpage. Often I’d reboot and end up going through the whole thing again. When I finally got a screen open, the freezing would start followed by everything locking up including shutting down. In fact I was questioning if my mouse needed replacing as I’d click and nothing happened. Thus my comment of cleaning my mouse. Then today’s report above mentioning I couldn’t shut down and appeared to be in a loop with IE trying to end task. Was it trying to end all 12 pages? *shrug* I don’t know, I come to you for advice

I’m pleased to report when I finished the malwarebytes scan, when I went to reboot, I only had to click on “restart” and it shut down immediately – no end task boxes. Also when I rebooted, the webpage opened the first time I clicked on the icon. This is PROGRESS! :yeah:

I’ve completed my first tasks as you asked and await further instructions.

Below are my scan reports.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
SpywareBot

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
SpywareBot was not listed in my Add/Remove list
It wasn't found in my Program Files
It wasn't found in my Application Data folder
I did a system search and it wasn't found.

I have no idea where the SpywearBot came from. I've known for a long time not to touch it and know the difference between it and SpyBot S&D

Can I remove the following?
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpywareBot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot

I haven't used Housecall since my very first visit here in 2004 - can it be deleted?
O16 - DPF: {04E214E5-63AF-4236-83C6-A7ADCBF9BD02} - http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/housecall/xscan60.cab

Same for PCPitstop - can it be deleted?
O16 - DPF: {0E5F0222-96B9-11D3-8997-00104BD12D94} (PCPitstop Utility) - http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/PCPitStop.CAB

Computer is running much better and faster. It had obviously been slowing down for a while as I'd forgotten how fast it can be. It also only took 3 minutes to shutdown and reboot! rather than the 11 :smack: minutes it was taking!

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
computer is running very well. fast, no problems on re-booting or shutting down.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Log looks good to me :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
