My son's computer has several annoying pop ups. The worst is one that looks like a winows popup that says "Your computer is infected - Windows has detected spy ware infection". It pops in and then it goes away - I would really like to go away permanantly though. Here is my scan log. Thank you in advance for any help you could give us. He had the same problem a couple of years ago on a different computer and I was able to fix it thanks to someone on this forum.

Here is the log file from Hijack This:

Hi nashvillebill.
My name is revel and I will be working with you to resolve the issues you're experiencing.

As I am still in training, all of my instructions must be checked by one of our malware experts before they are given to you. Thus, there may be some delay in responding. I know that you would like your computer working as quickly as possible and I will work hard to see that happen.

Before we begin, please review these important notes:
  • The fixes are specific to your machine and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your machine is clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't understand the instructions, please stop and ask for clarification before proceeding.
  • Continue to reply to this topic; do not start another.

I will be back as soon as possible with instructions.
Hi nashvillebill
Your log indicates the presence of one or more backdoor trojans. The capabilities of this trojan infection include password stealing and other malicious activities, so I advise you to take all necessary precautions to safeguard your accounts, passwords, and other sensitive data. If you have used this computer for financial/banking transactions, you should notify your banks and financial institutions that you may have been a victim of identity theft so that they can put a watch on your accounts.

I also recommend that you disconnect this computer from the internet. Change your passwords for email, banks, etc., immediately from a clean computer only.

Please review this link >> How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware

Many experts believe that once a computer has been infected with this type of Trojan, it is best to reformat and reinstall the operating system. The reason is that even after cleaning, there may be remnants of the infection(s) left in the system. Only you can decide whether it would be best to reformat and start over depending upon what you use the computer for and what information you have stored on it. We can proceed with cleaning your system if you prefer. If you decide to reformat, be sure to save your important data to backup media and be sure to scan it all before putting it back on to a clean system.

Please read the following >> When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

Let me know your decision in your next reply.
I would like to clean the computer, rather than reformatting, because it is my son's and he doesn't use it for financial purposes.
Hi nashvillebill :)
Before we continue with the fix, your log indicates that there are two antivirus programs running on the computer. Having an antivirus is essential but running two can cause conflicts, false alarms, and hinder system performance. I recommend that you uninstall either McAfee or Symantec though the choice of which is up to you. However, since McAfee appears to be part of the Security Suite, removing Symantec may be the better option.

To uninstall the antivirus program of your choice, please use Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel. If you have any difficulties removing Symantec, please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec's website.

After you have uninstalled one of your antivirus programs, please rerun HijackThis and post a new log.

Regards
revel
Sorry, I haven't had a chance to work on it until this afternoon. Here is the new log file.

Thanks, Bill

Hi nashvillebill

NOTE: In the event that you already have Combofix, it is essential that you delete it and download a new copy.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they may otherwise interfere with our tools. This is usually done via a right-click on the program's System Tray icon.

  • Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Additional Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making IE the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

In your next reply, please provide:
(1) Combofix log
(2) a new HijackThis log
