Hi, I have tried updating avg 8 free for 3 days now but I keep getting the same error each time. 'Invalid Update Control RTC File'. It says to correct the error and try again. I have found this fix for it, but it doesn't work the way it is described, on my pc anyway: "Something has corrupted your CTF files and the following should remove them so new copies can be downloaded. You must be logged into the system as a computer administrator when you create and run the following file. Using NOTEPAD create a file named ResetCTF.cmd and copy/paste the following two lines in it… Then save the file to a location of your choice. FOR /F "tokens=2*" %%a IN ('reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AVG\Avg8" /v "AvgAllUsersDir"') DO (SET avgdatapath=%%~fb) del "%avgdatapath%\update\download\*.ctf" When you save the file… I suggest you use the file name ResetCTF.cmd and make certain that the Save as type option is set as All Files and not Text Document After you save it, to run the file with Windows 2000 or XP just click on the file. In Vista you need to right click and select "Run as Administrator" If it was created properly, you should see a black Command box flash on the screen briefly, if it was not created properly NOTEPAD or your default text editor will open. Once you have run that file… try updating AVG again." (To create the file I used the File menu and new in notepad. Was this right?) The black box appears but the slider bar is at the bottom and the location of and the file name I saved just keeps rolling up the black screen and neither notepad or my default text editor open, so I cannot correct the fault from that. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to fix it, or has anyone any other ideas, please. Sorry if this is long winded, but I thought I'd explain exactly what I did. Thanks for reading and in advance for any help offered. hedley
Hi, If you accurately followed the reg fix instructions including giving it the correct file name including suffix (saving as all files" then its time for further action.
1 Set up a System Restore Point,
2 Perform a back up…see my canned speech below

Please take the opportunity now to bring your back up/archive/copy of all your important stuff 100% up to date, check that it's accurate, reproducible and held securely on removable media (not your hard drive)……the idea here is to ensure that all your important data, files, spreadsheets, work, music, emails, log in details, user names, address book, drivers, letters, invoices, videos etc….in fact everything that is important to you (stuff that you would not like to permanently lose) is kept safe on external media.
Whilst you are doing this collect together all your application installation discs (or downloaded installation executables) serial numbers, product licence keys (including the one
for Windows itself and the Microsoft Windows installation disc and or Manufacturer's Restore and Driver /utilities discs. If you have made a disc image then keep this safe also on removable media and ensure you have made a bootable CD/DVD for use in the event that Windows will not start.

3 Download a fresh copy of AVG 8 free and save it to your desktop
4 Disconnect from the Internet…physically pull out the plug
5 Right Click on the AVG Icon in the System Tray, select "Exit", accept the warning
6 From Control Panel>Add and Remove Programs uninstall AVG 8 free
When it's uninstalled, close down your computer wait 30 seconds with a blank black screen and then restart your computer
5 Wait 5 minutes, now install AVG 8 free again.
6 When it's successfully installed, reconnect to the Internet
7 Update AVG 8 Free with the latest definitions
and see how you go

Also when uninstalling AVG it is also best to delete the folder C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\avg8. I have found that keeping this sometimes causes problems. (You can always save that folder somewhere else just in case you need it.) The normal uninstall doesnt remove that folder.
