Hey, my computer has reduced performance over the last week and many new symptoms. I tried some self help fixes but there's either more I don't know about or they aren't being disposed of properly. Symptoms are:

"Windows Security Alert" pop up boxes. I think theyre fake.

IE not being able to display any page (firefox still can)

IE starting and going to "http://directnameservice—2008.com/r.php?sid=0&aid=0&said=0&pn=" and "http://www.safewebnavigate–2008.com/index.php?sid=0&pn=&said=0&aid=0&pid=0" or other "you have a virus, this software will fix it" sites

A new toolbar 'peltodgx' in IE

Start Menu not displaying anything but recently used programs, Set Program Access And Defaults, Connect To, Printer & Faxes and Turn Computer Off. Run, Standby, Programs, Control Panel etc all missing

No access to Task Manager, Desktop Properties, Time and Date Properties,

Fan always running at full as if the computer is doing a million things

any help will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome unearth

I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • A lack of symptoms does not necessarily mean your computer is clean.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Please Note: My instructions to you are checked by an expert prior to posting. This may cause a small delay between posts.
Thanks

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
How To Use Combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix
A guide to do this can be found here.
The ones that need to be closed/disabled are:
AVG7

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you
Include the following reports for further review so we may continue cleaning the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
