Hi All,

If it helps, I am running Windows XP Media Ctr Edtn, IE7 (and now Fireox)…ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. After running a number of spyware/antivirus programs the following issues keep happening….

1) I receive the pop up message: "Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files….Click yes to run spyware removal.

2) A number (or all, I'm not sure) of my Administration rights have been disabled, including Task Manager, Control/Panel (which is now gone from my Start menu), etc. My homepage resets to Google (I normally have it on Yahoo) on reboot but only in IE7 (which is what I was running when the infection occured).

3) IE7 and Firefox tend to hang/freeze on occassion. Closing a window will sometimes freeze and will freeze up my entire system…sometimes requiring a hard shut down.

4) My companies Webmail (when running IE7) will open new windows for emails, replies, etc. but they will just open a new main Inbox page.

I konw I received this from downloading a torrent file and I have learned my lesson the hardway. I still need help and apologize for not following the guidelines in my previous post some time ago. I have run the ATF Cleaner, Spybot S&D and AVG Anti-Spyware as instructed in the Self Help Fixes for Spyware/Malware guidlines (and my apologies for not following them properly in a pervious post).

Below are my AVG Anti-Spyware scan results and a new HiJackThis log….

Hi LD,

No worries about the delay…

Right now my computer seems to be running ok. I have not had the pop up since I posted here and it seems to be running smoothly. Here is the latest HiJackThis log:

Hi LD, Sorry for not posting this earlier but after I just posted I restarted my computer to see how it would run. No pop up yet but when the machine did start back up I received this message: "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\proper.exe….." Also, as I mentioned in my first post my Administration rights are still locked/gone. thanks KL
Only for Windows XP and Windows 2000

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall

Note:
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected,
if it does open task-manager > use the processes tab (press ctrl alt and del at the same time) and end
any process's of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know and what process you had to end.

LD, Seems to be running great :) Control Panel, Task Mgr are working fine, etc. and the machine seems to be running smoothly. I can't thank you enough! Should I reboot or anything just to be sure? One other question…will this post be deleted? I noticed my name came up in the log posts, is it dangerous/unsafe to have my real name in these posts along with other information that may be shown? Just curious. Thanks. Cheers, KL
Don't worry about your name showing. It would the IP address and email address to worry about and that doesn't show.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]
  • If shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
