XP Pro desktop of a neighbor. 2 gB RAM, Pentium IV, large disk, pretty basic setup. I've cleared out a bunch of junk with CCleaner, kids games by uninstalling, downloaded crud and some Zango/Zlob crud using SpyBot and some progs I have but it's slow as all get-out. I've looked at the startup entries with a prog called AutoRuns. It's three-four times the size of mine! He's having issues too now with both of his optical drives. Stick in a commercial CD/DVD or a homebrewed disk and XP fails to acknowledge the disk. Device Mgr shows them both as "…working properly". I have not tried to delete them and reload drivers. Anyway, I thought we'd submit the HJT log here to see if we have a spyware/crapware issue. I'd be surprised if we didn't find more bad guys in here given its usage so I'm looking for some expert assistance. I'm fairly skilled with DOS , Safe Mode and XP and Explorer and so forth. Here's today's log. I hope someone can work with me and provide some guidance. Thanks!

Also let me know how things are running now
Thanks for the reset. Note this system is at the neighbor's house and may cause a slight delay and providing feedback. I receive no compensation for any of this work that I do.

Alright here's where we are. I visited and performed both an MBAM clean/scan and a new HJT. While there we had a long chat about what I perceived as an excessive number of programs loaded on the system. We went through his entire system choosing to eliminate some 15 programs many of which had never been used or last used in 2006. So we uninstalled all 15 which included such things as Yahoo Toolbar, Google Toolbar, things which he never uses. Removing this junk also incidentally brought his iPod/iTunes synch/software back to life  . Many progs are in need of update i.e. RealPlayer, Flash, Adobe Reader, QuickTime, the standard stuff - that's for my next visit. He's also not installed SP3 and neither have I for that matter. Note: I was the one who put on SpyBot S&D when we first started so stop further degradation.

I don't trust

(Note: The kids got in there one day and did a whole slew of Disney Games which we removed. They now have their own system to ruin…)
I don't believe the O24 entry is doing anything useful either.

So, how's it working now? Fairly peppy. It's about 1.5 minutes to the desktop from a cold start. He's recently added a large Maxtor external HDD for backup - that's perhaps some of the cause of slow startup as XP wants to index it. We can turn off indexing later. I'd still like to see more fat trimmed away. His Outlook is way overburdened with an extra large file store. I'd like to see more RAM added on it. And I'd like to see one of the optical drives replaced because I can't get it to work through the standard hardware troubleshooting procedures.

But all in all, I think one or two more logs with your help and we can move on.

Thanks again.

Hoib.
I noticed you posted the same log on the AumHa forums HERE

You should only seek help at one forum.
If you have multi-posted, we ask that you select one forum from those where you sought help and ask the others to close your topics. Although we understand you wish your problems to be addressed as soon as possible, there are reasons why multi-posting causes problems.

By Multi Posting you are utilizing the time of two (or more) trained helpers.

Helpers take a long time to train. They need a great deal of expertise and knowledge to be able to safely remove Malware from your computer and because of this are in short supply. We wish to use them to help the maximum number of people, and if they are researching the log of someone who is already being helped, then their time and effort is going to waste.

Understandably this causes a certain amount of bad feeling.

From the helper who has needlessly spent time researching your log and compiling and posting instructions, and from others who have to wait longer for their problems to be addressed.

Advice from two seperate helpers can cause problems.

Different helpers may use different methods to combat your infection. While each in isolation is safe, that may not be so if you follow the advice of both together. Some of the tools we use are very powerful and have to be used in a specific way and in some cases do not combine well with others. By using advice from two different sources it is possible that tools may be used that do not combine well and you may severely damage your computer, even rendering it inoperable in some circumstances.

I have also noticed you have been posting logs here, and at several of the most popular forums, and I even found this…

Hello and glad to have joined. I'm retired and do a lot of work with the working poor in our community. As such I'm involved in piecing together older computers, mostly donated, so they can be set up for our clients to use.

At http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread145318.html

So basically it appears as though you are a computer tech, do you get paid for this work? Just keep in mind that malware fighters are a very small group of dedicated helpers, and we all work the same forums, so we pretty much have an eye on everything going on in our community. If you are really into helping people with their computers why not join one of our schools and learn for yourself the skills required to help others?

Thanks for the reset. Note this system is at the neighbor's house and may cause a slight delay and providing feedback. I receive no compensation for any of this work that I do.

I will leave this topic open since we already started, but more then likely you may not be able to receive help here in the future.

I am looking at your logs and will get back to you as soon as possible, please close your open topics at the other forums.
Hi Hoib,

Please do the following…

Please disable TeaTimer as it may interfere with the fix:
  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

Fix with HijackThis

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis, and reboot the system.

And let me know how things are running, and if you are still having any problems
Sir:

Hold on a minute, please.

It is NOT the same log. Please carefully look at the dates of the logs. One is 9/5/08 and one is 10/2/08 - a full month apart. They are vastly different logs for two vastly different malware related issues. Yes, it is the same computer and naturally there are similarities. But each log/session is for two seperate and distinct problems. Notice that on the log dated 9/5 I received no help whatsoever from that post. On 9/5 there was a problem having to do with Services.exe which I fixed on my own again, with no help. Today there is a second one which we are presently working on with help.

I carefully watch what I post in any and all forums. The daniweb post you found has of course, nothing to do with the computer now in question. I've asked for no help on daniweb, I simply joined the group. So while I understand your point about double posts - what you imply absolutely is not borne out in fact.

Now, I'm going to the house to tomorrow to work on your latest suggestions. I invite anyone to read my last entry here where I state unequivocally that I do not get reimbursed for any of this kind of work. And, no I'm not a "computer tech" - I'm a retired person. I have time and I just have a lot more experience with some of these things than most people. If it makes me look like a "tech" I can't help it.

I'm sorry this has degraded into a troublesome encounter. It wasn't my intent to do so.

Hoib

I'm sorry this has degraded into a troublesome encounter. It wasn't my intent to do so.

No worries Hoib, like I said if you’re really interested in helping people you should join one of the free schools available. The only thing it cost you is a few months of your time :)

Just post the other logs when you can
Hello again -

RSIT logs apear below. System still takes about 1.5-2.0 minutes to come to the desktop from a restart. There was a BSOD this morning before I arrived. User was surfing a shopping site and when it came up he did not jot down the stop code. Review of System and Application Events yields no clue. User reports his iTunes pesters for a synch with the iPod device plugged in to the USB port. I could not replicate the event after an hour or so of fiddling around. So, I guess for now both conditions can be ignored but watched. I am sure there is improvement overall.

Here's the logs requested:

Hi Hoib,

User reports his iTunes pesters for a synch with the iPod device plugged in to the USB port. I could not replicate the event after an hour or so of fiddling around.

The ipod synch happens when you plug the ipod into a USB port even if it’s just to charge it. I believe that function is controlled in the Apple software that is used for downloading/uploading music for the ipod, so the user should be able to make that manual and only use it when needed.

Update Java

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Also are there any other problems then the system still taking 1.5-2.0 because that’s not really too bad. The user could probably clear that up a little by disabling a few programs that run on start up.
I am unable to run the Kaspersky Online Scan after multiple attempts over the last two days. Kaspersky complains that we don't have Java 1.5 installed. Yet when I used their own link to install/update Java, it still comes back and insists Java 1.5 is needed. The newly installed version is JRE 6 update 7. I don't know how that relates to Java 1.5 vs Java Runtime 6 upd 7. The Java site indicates we have the latest version installed for XP. So we have the latest yet KAS won't detect it and I can go no further than the opening panel. I say let's call it resolved at this point. With a defrag today, I think a full minute to the desktop is acceptable. thanks for the help.
Hi Hoib,

Yeah sometimes Kaspersky Online Scan acts a little crazy :) here are some tips and tricks you can have the user take a look at to help stay safe.

This is my standard post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise me of any problems you still have. . I know you already have some of these items like antivirus or firewall, but I like to include them anyway incase you ever need them or want to change them.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

[external image: Posted Image] 1.) Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself. If you insist on using a P2P program, please read This Article written by Mike Healan of Spywareinfo.com fame. It is an updated and comprehensive article that gives in-depth detail about which P2P programs are "safe" to use.

[external image: Posted Image] 2.) Go to Intenet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update > Product Updates, and install ALL High-Priority Security Updates listed. If you're running Windows XP, that of course includes the Service Pack 2! If you suspect your computer is infected with Malware of any type, we advise you to not install SP2 if you don't already have it. You can post a HijackThis log on our Forums to get free Expert help cleaning your machine. Once you are sure you have a clean system, it is highly recommended to install SP2 to help prevent against future infections.

It's important to always keep current with the latest security fixes from Microsoft.
Install those patches for Internet Explorer, and make sure your installation of Java VM is up-to-date. There are some well known security bugs with Microsoft Java VM which are exploited regularly by browser hijackers.

[external image: Posted Image] 3.) Open Intenet Explorer and go to Internet Options > Security > Internet, then press "Default Level", then OK. Now press "Custom Level." In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".

Now you will be asked whether you want ActiveX objects to be executed and whether you want software to be installed.
Sites that you know for sure are above suspicion can be moved to the Trusted Zone in Internet Option > Security.

So why is ActiveX so dangerous that you have to increase the security for it?
When your browser runs an activex control, it is running an executable program. It's no different from doubleclicking an exe file on your hard drive.
Would you run just any random file downloaded off a web site without knowing what it is and what it does?

[external image: Posted Image] 4.) Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster

It will protect you from most spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.

Download and install, download the latest updates, and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer) Press "Enable All Protection", and you're done.
The spyware that you told Spywareblaster to set the "kill bit" for won't be a hazard to you any longer. Although it won't protect you from every form of spyware known to man, it is a very potent extra layer of protection.
Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

[external image: Posted Image] 5.) Let's also not forget that Spybot Search & Destroy has the Immunize feature which works roughly the same way. Another feature within Spybot is the TeaTimer option. This option immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them. TeaTimer also detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys and gives you an option to allow them or not.

[external image: Posted Image] 6.) Microsoft now offers their own free malicious software blocking tool. Windows Defender improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.

[external image: Posted Image] 7.) Another excellent program by Javacool we recommend is SpywareGuard.
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

[external image: Posted Image] 8.) IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Another good hosts program is mvpshosts. This little program packs a powerful punch as it block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial.

*It is important to note that all of the above programs/files can be run simultaneously on your system. They will work together in layers, so to speak, to help protect your computer. However, the following suggestions are designed to only run one of each. It is not a good idea to run more than one firewall, and one anti-virus program. Running more than one of these at a time can cause system crashes, high system usage and/or conflicts with each other.*

[external image: Posted Image] 9.) It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions. Three good ones that are freeware to boot are ZoneAlarm, Kerio and Sygate

[external image: Posted Image] 10.) An Anti-Virus product is a necessity. There are many excellent programs that you can purchase. However, we choose to advocate the use of free programs whenever possible. Some very good and easy-to-use free A/V programs are AVG, Avast, and AntiVir. It's a good idea to set these to receive automatic updates so you are always as fully protected as possible from the newest virus threats.

NOTE: DO NOT install more than one anti-virus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
