Is Avast better than AVG Free 8.0?

Windows keeps bugging me to update to SP3 from SP2, but I hesitate because I hear SP3 isn't supported by AVG Free 8.0 I hear Avast is free and good. What to do?

Hope you like it here, lots to read and learn.

I have SP3 and Avast Antivirus on my systems, both work so well together. I have no experience with AVG 8.0. I uninstalled AVG 7.5 when it gave me troubles some time ago and have not looked back.
