I installed AVG Free 8 on my Apache Web Server which runs XP Pro + SP2, after being notified that updates for 7.5 will not be released after the end of May.
System locked up on restart after the install. Rebooted several times and it locked up each time. Booted to Safe Mode and uninstalled AVG Free 8 and the problem is gone.
Works okay on my HP Desktop. Have not tried my Dell Laptop yet.
Just noticed AVG Free has become much more intrusive, constantly asking me to update the the paid Pro version. Time to look for a new free AV program.
I noticed that too - it seems all the makers are pushing their products, and us users, towards suites - attempting to deny users to "roll your own" security suite. Not happy.
Another thing about AVG 8.0 (free and paid), is that its incompatible with almost any security program using immunize.
That goes for: SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D and Advanced Windows Care.
I tried AVG 8.0 and it detected about 190 false positives. Did alittle research on the matter. Appearently it was because of SpywareBlaster. Disabled SpywareBlaster protection, and second scan found zero.
Almost anyone else making AV's have worked around this, why can't AVG (Grisoft)?
All the problems concerning AVG 8.0 just keeps popping up around the web. Update not functioning, false positives, Yahoo toolbar, problems installing if you had AVG 7.5 installed previous, etc etc…..
Personnally, I have thought about, if it were because that they actually don't want a free AV anymore, but have had one for so long time
that it was expected of them to have one. So now, they just launched it, regardless of its flaws. It may not be so, its just my opinion.
Just hope that they will fix these issues in the future, because despite its flaws, its a good AV with the Ewido anti-spyware to boot!
Avira AV is a good AV as far as my knowledge goes. Only problem with the free version is the "nag screen" during definition update. You get a pop-up window asking you to consider upgrading to the paid version. Other than that, its a fully capable AV. Easy to-use interface, don't say much, unless it detects something, and aint a resource hog like Avast can be.
I just installed Avira on my Web Server since AVG 8 won't run there. I'll try it for awhile and see how it goes.
Unfortunately, it does not support DOS based windows either. Looks like the free AV market is abandoning the older Windows Operating systems, which makes them excellent targets for takeover as bots.
Hope you fill in some experience details about Avira after using it for some time.
On the other hand, I could hook up my old test-pc and see for myself. Have Returnil installed on it, and could easily surf some unsafe sites to test it. Sort of, driving it through the fire so to speak
I'll let you in on the details after testing it.

I recently installed free version 8, not as good as 7.5 ,,,, took 5 hours to scan my computer !!!
It's soooo nosey, asks too many questions and I am looking to find the 7.5 free edition again.
My suggestion is anyone thinking of updating - don't bother, stick with 7.5 which does still update on a regular basis.

Hi luckydog1
You might want to read the opening post once again. Updates to AVG 7.5 stops end of may. That means, after that, AVG 7.5 can and will become a liabilty when it runs out of updated virus definitions. So after that point, you still have to switch to AVG 8 or another Anti-Virus program.
Just found out that the End-of-life for AVG 7.5 updates is 12/31/2008 so there is more time than I originally thought. Still been an interesting discussion though.
Just for info, …..I have switched one of my machines( Win XP Pro) to AVG 8 (Free), and it works well, no problems after one week. It seems to have little impact on performance and no false positives (as yet!) The updates are fast and install with no hassle. Scanning is quick taking just 55 minutes for a full scan ( 12GB)
It seems like a good piece of kit……and I like the price! ……the "site adviser" function will also reassure lots of folks.
Perhaps the version I installed is an improved version?

It also ran well on my machine. The only thing I had to complaine about, was the false positives it picked up because of SpywareBlaster.
But, nonetheless, the troubles keep popping up around. This might be what you can expect from a newly released version. So bottomline may be that some people have programs which conflicts with AVG. But it is a good AV, and for those where it will run well, they are fortunate. As I said, I really hope they weed out the flaws, so I once again can run AVG
