I just joined, and I know this isn't the correct forum, but maybe I can be steered to to where I need to be - I was the lucky recipient of winself a couple of days ago - a lot of work later, I think it's still in my machine (although a search for "winself" doesn't show anything, whereas earlier today it did show up in a search). I think it might still be around because my machine's still a little sluggish….
So - my first question is - is there a way to know for sure if I'm virus free?
My second question - between pulling my hair out and swearing a lot (a lot!) I now have the following "protection-oriented" programs running - Norton Internet Security / Anti-virus (although the subscription's been expired for well over a year); AVG; Hijack this; and the Malware bytes one you guys provide the link to. Oh, and Windows firewall / security centre thingy. And I used the ATF cleaner also. I'm looking for some advice on which ones to keep, and which one's to ditch.
If this isn't the correct forum, I'd appreciate a heads-up on which forums I should head to.
Thanx already for the cleanup program links.
Cheers,
Davie
Welcome to WTT Forums. Are you still having malware trouble? You can start your thread in the Malware Forums and consult a Malware Fighter to see if your log is clean. There are other free anti-virus programs out there besides Norton, which I would suggest you switch to because NIS is a outdated program, which I consider 'useless' because it is not longer supported with program and definition updates. Free, reputable anti-virus programs you can choose from are AVG, avast!, or Anti-Vir. HiJack this would be more like a diagnostic tool, so it wouldn't be a malware tool (scanning). As for your firewall, Windows Firewall only offers "inbound" protection however does not offer outbound, so it is at a disadvantage compared to other Firewalls. If you have a router firewall that would be nice, but adding additional protection by using a software firewall (ZoneAlarm, Comodo Pro, Kerio Personal Firewall) would be better.
ATF Cleaner could be your "housecleaning" tool, as it empties your cache, temp. files, and cookies from your browsers. It also empties out your Recycle Bin and Temp. Files folder.
Practice Safe Hex, use a firewall, anti-virus/spyware program, and you're good to go.
Thanks for the advice on the AV's etc.
I did actually get my arse in gear and start looking around the forums, and posted my hijack this log in the right place. Just read a reply I got, so gonna start working on that.
