I recently discovered a problem on my husband's computer, so I do not know exactly when it originated (any tips on how to tell?). So far, the problem manifests itself by changing the system time to military time and attaching "virus alert!" whenever & wherever the system displays the time. I also lost all of the options that normally appear on the right side of my start up menu such as "control panel" & the "run…" feature. I have not discovered any other problems, but am reluctant to explore too much because I don't know if I am causing more of a problem. I use ZoneAlarm's firewall, AVG's anti-virus program, Spybot, and Spywareblaster. After updating the programs, I ran AVG & Spybot…first in regular mode, then in safe mode. When that did not affect the "virus alert!" problem, I did some research on-line. I am posting here because it seemed that the solutions I found were particular to logs reported from specific users. Before realizing that I should probably just look for help specific to my system, I tried one solution that suggested running Spybot and CCleaner in safe mode, removing my restore points, and restarting and another that suggested running SDFix in safe mode….again, the alert remains w/ military time. I am new to tech forums and posting, so I will not add anything else (or try any other solutions) until a tech guru lets me know what to do! Thanks in advance for your help!
Ok…I followed the instructions in the "Before Posting a Hijackthis Log" as well as the "Welcome New Members" posts…After running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware per the "Before Posting…" instructions, the "virus alert!"/military time problem disappeared and my missing Start Menu items reappeared. To complete the instructions, I am posting the Malwarebytes and Hijackthis logs…

I am hoping that the disappearance of the alert/military time along w/ reappearance of Start Menu items means that the problem has been resolved…does it look like that's the case? Let me know if you need more information….thanks again!
Hi,

Looking better and glad it's running better. We still have some things to deal with though.

1. You appear to have the program SpywareKilla installed. The program has a poor reputation and is on the rogue/suspect list.

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

I would advise that you remove it using Add or Remove Programs.

2. I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes.

Disabling Spybot Teatimer v1.5

  • If you have version 1.5, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).
  • Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools.
  • Check (tick) this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
  • You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
  • Uncheck (untick) this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  • Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Disabling Spybot Teatimer v1.4

  • If you have version 1.4, go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.

3. Run HijackThis. Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Hello:

Computer seems to be running much better! Ran into a few problems with the last set of instructions….I could not find SpyWareKilla in the Add/Remove Programs function, so I tried to remove it manually by deleting its subfolder and program folder through the Windows Explore function. I probably need to do something else to completely blast it out as I see it still shows up in the log.

Had no problem(s) turning off Spybot's TeaTimer to run HiJackThis and let it fix the entries you listed. However, when I got to Kaspersky, I could not get it to run. I updated Java, per the Kaspersky site's recommendation, to the latest version. Tried running Kaspersky which kept returning an error message that Kaspersky needs Java version 1.5 or later to run….the one I downloaded should fit into that "later" category. I also tried to run Kaspersky after re-booting, but no luck….suggestions?

I figured I would send you the latest HiJackThis log in the meantime….

Thank you!
For the SpyKilla program all we need to do is take out that entry in HJT.

Run HijackThis. Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on this:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpywareKilla] "C:\PROGRA~1\SPYWAR~1\SpywareKilla.exe" /s

Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.

We can try another virus scanner if you cannot get Kaspersky to work. Yes, you have the latest version of Java so not sure why it's not working.

TrendMicro™ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.

Post any details about the scan in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.
I successfully located & deleted SpyWareKilla entry in HiJackThis….also attached a new log for you.

Trend Micro Scan also would not run…reporting that Java is disabled on my system or no Java runtime environment is installed. Apparently, I need to resolve this Java issue before I can run anything! Any suggestions?

Thanks again for your help!
Hi,
Let's uninstall all versions of Java, and download and install the newest version. Here's my instructions for that. Make sure all old versions are gone.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
  • Go to the Sun Java Website
  • Click on the download button next to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7
  • Check the circle next to I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click on the link Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Now try the Kaspersky or Trend Micro scans again.
Sorry for the delayed response….

Just after I posted my last response about problems running Kaspersky & Trend Micro, Trend Micro decided to work (prior to my un/re-install). I still cannot get Kaspersky to run…even after un/re-installing Java per your instructions. Is there anything else I should try to fix that or just not worry about it?

Trend Micro cleaned/removed several cookies. I also attached a new HiJackThis log…

Computer seems to be running normally…I have not experienced any more "virus alert"/time change/missing items in Start Menu problems…

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

Use Zoned Out -
Zoned Out will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
