Hello,
I'm not having the best of times with my pc since yesterday.
I was watching a plane crash documentary (the irony) on the pc when I suddenly got a warning from Data Execution Prevention (set to OptIn) that it would close explorer.exe.
Ok, that's odd let's see if we can get the desktop back again, went to taskmanager and started explorer.exe only to find it didn't want to start.
The boot process couldn't get it started either so booting ended with just the desktop wallpaper.
After spending a day trying to fix my desktop, looking in registry if dep might have blocked explorer.exe, thinking it might have gone corrupt and replacing it with a fresh extracted one from the windows cd, etc. nothing helped.
Finally restored to a point prior to the crash, I don't like using restore points since I find I usually end up with a bugged system all over but it seemed to work, at least I had the desktop back.
But now firefox refuses to load sites 9/10 times, it just get's stuck at 0% loaded or 50% loaded.
It only sometimes loads the first address you try after starting firefox but nothing more.
At first I thought another one of those restore point bugs and reinstalled firefox, didn't help.
Also checked the usual advice about addins, so I tried firefox safe mode with everything off, nothing changed.
By then I started thinking in the line of virus, trojan etc.
AVG, A-squared and ad-aware didn't find anything.
I had one more DEP closure of explorer.exe today when changing a filename but pressing reset instead of OK'ing the dialog spared doing another restore.
As for my security settings:
Win XP Pro SP 2 firewall on
Firefox + NoScript with java off
AVG, common sense
The last thing I did was installing hijackthis and then decided to get help with the log before going at it alone instead of after
and registered at this forum.
Now you know exactly what happened that made me aware of a problem here's the log:
I highly suspect the [randomgibberish].dll's but since the filenames are random characters googling it didn't help me out.
Any help would be very much appreciated, I can not back up at this point in time for a fresh setup
Regards, Luggage
PS I'm writing this with IE7 from inside a virtual machine on the pc in question, I don't find IE at all secure and didn't want to run it from my actual desktop and well since firefox is on the fritz.
EDIT: Just found and wen't through your do this first before posting thread (sorry about that)
Here's the log after Malwarebyte finding something like 40 entries of Vundo. (neither avg, a squared or ad-aware noticed)
and removing it, at least I hope, I'll be back with a new hijackthis log when i'm done rebooting.
Malwarebyte log:
Ok after rebooting I got this error dialog starting windows: (freely translated from my Dutch XP)
-Rundll.exe Invalid Display/Image
The application or DLL-file c:\windows\system32\xdwtxxcg.dll is not a valid windows-copy. Check this on your installationdiskette.
followed by
-RUNDLL
An error has occurred while loading c:\windows\system32\xdwtxxcg.dll.
%1 is not a valid win32-application.
New hijackthis log:
Doesn't seem completely clear to me (isn't vundo embedded in amongst others, explorer.exe?)
Also could one attribute harsh errors to vundo? I did not have any popup add issues at all, but nasty windows issues started to crop up as of late, hard error blue screen, direct3d issues in fullscreen flight sim x (probably not related), DEP crashing explorer.exe on both occasions coincidentally had a video running.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT:
I seem to have killed it.
Malwarebyte still found 3 instances of Trojan.Vunda and 1x Backdoor.agent after it's cleaning, Being impatient for a reply I booted safemode and ran malwarebyte in there again, it deleted the 4 scumware items after which I ran ccleaner just for good measure and regsupreme pro to make sure the registry was clean after which I rebooted normally again.
Here's the logs after rebooting into normal windows again:
and
I'm still worried about C:\WINDOWS\system32\frtiuqyp.dll but malwarebyte says nothing of it, my other scanners aren't any more talkative but then they missed the 40 vunda entries in the first place hmpfr.
Am I clean now or is this random dll another scumwarean?
I'm sorry for the long post and the many edits, but as the faq states you check who has been helped by checking No of replies.
(on a positive note I am once again able to post from firefox after these last scumware killing sessions
)

I'm still worried about C:\WINDOWS\system32\frtiuqyp.dll but malwarebyte says nothing of it, my other scanners aren't any more talkative but then they missed the 40 vunda entries in the first place hmpfr.
Am I clean now or is this random dll another scumwarean?
I'm sorry for the long post and the many edits, but as the faq states you check who has been helped by checking No of replies.
(on a positive note I am once again able to post from firefox after these last scumware killing sessions
