I'm using Windows XP 2002 SP 2 and have been infected with adware (saw something like trojan.adclicker) that I can't get rid of. I have Symantec (for all the good it does) running and used it, SuperAntiSpyware and SDFix (followed directions in other posts to install and run) to try and eradicate the vermin to no avail. I'm including both the HJT and SDFix reports. I'm grateful for the help!

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.
OK, including below:
1) malawarebyte log
2) updated HJT log (normal mode)
3) machine seems to run faster and haven't yet seen ads pop up and but there are unnatural pauses when surfing (even to pages that should be cached). Causes of that could be many, though.

1) Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {224FD31A-E283-4023-85D1-BFB926583A05} - C:\DOCUME~1\markb\LOCALS~1\Temp\vtULCSjJ.dll (file missing)

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked

2) Download DelDomains.inf from here and save it to your Desktop.
* If you use Firefox, right click the link and from the menu that appears, click on Save Link As… *

Right click on DelDomains.inf and from the menu that appears, click on Install.

* Please Note: If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection *

3) You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6.
  • Accept the license agreement by clicking the appropriate radio button and then continue.
  • Under Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 6, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following steps will serve as a spring clean for your PC. Not all of them will be of benefit to your PC as this is a general post, but the overall effect should be positive.
1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you no longer use and then reboot your PC.
2) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache
The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.
When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
Please Note: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only.
3) Double click My Computer.
Right click the disc drive you wish to check.
Click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools Tab.
Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
In the "Check Disc Local Disk (C:)" dialog box, check both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start.
This will look for and attempt to repair any errors that your hard drive has.
4) Defragment your hard drive. A tutorial for disc defragmentation is available here.
5) Download and run StartUp Inspector.
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Go here and click the Kaspersky Online Scanner button - I.E. is required for this scan.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and check the "Scan using the following antivirus database" is set to extended, not standard, and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As…
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
Grrr. Performance seems to be better on the infected computer, but every time I think I have a 'clean' machine, I run a scan and find something new.

1) I fixed the checked items in the HJT scan and have included the most recent HJT log below
2) I installed DelDomains
3) I updated Java

Afterwards, I rebooted, reran SUPERAntiSpyware, which found more Adware.Vundo carp**. I then ran Kaspersky scan which found a bunch of issues. See log below.

Don't know what to do!

Scan process completed.

Afterwards, I rebooted, reran SUPERAntiSpyware, which found more Adware.Vundo carp**.

Unless I see a log, I can't say what has been identified and removed. Vundo is notorious for dropping trash everywhere, so it's possible that all you are seeing is a spot of tidying up of leftovers rather than any real infection.

I then ran Kaspersky scan which found a bunch of issues.

There are two sorts of "issues" here, and neither are of any real interest.
Object is locked skipped just identifies files that are designed to keep scanners from nosing around inside them, and legitimate files do this all the time.
Infected is what it says, but the file path is all important here.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine and C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Quarantine are where the respective scanners dump anything they find, and there's not much these files can do to escape, unless you feel the urge to restore them to their former locations - and you're not likely to do that, are you?

Performance seems to be better on the infected computer

That's the main thing. If the PC is behaving itself, then i'd say that all you were seeing is leftovers being identified and removed and not to get all "Grrr" about it.
The fact that you posted a log here tells me that SAS wasn't up to the task of dealing with a live Vundo infection, so the fact that it's managing to do something now is probably indicative of the fact that the files that it's getting aren't able to hide or defend themselves any more.

Your log doesn't appear to show a third-party software firewall installed - if you have one, and i've missed it, please ignore this.
If you are relying the firewall that comes with Service Pack 2, then you need to install one. While the SP2 firewall is better than nothing, it doesn't monitor outgoing traffic, so anything malicious on your computer can 'phone home' at will.
If you are using a wireless router that comes with a NAT hardware firewall, this also doesn't monitor outgoing connections.

There are a few free firewalls available.
Comodo Firewall Pro, available here.
PC Tools Firewall Plus, available here.
Online Armor Free, available here.

It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download them all to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.
