My PC is infected with MicrobillSys trojan malware. My anti spyware system - Counterspy by Sunbelt Software - immediately detected it, advised that it was a high risk programme and recommended immediate removal. I ran the removal cycle, and Counterspy indicated that it had removed it, but without success. In spite of help from their support people the problem continues and they have recommended that I approach yourselves.

I would be grateful for any advice to assist me in removing the problem

I have downloaded 'hijackthis' and the log is as follows:

Hello Confused But Trys and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. First, we should disable CounterSpy for it may hinder our attempts at fixing the problem:

If you right click on the counterspy icon in your system tray by your clock and hit shut down counterspy. If you don't see the icon down there then press ctrl alt delete and go to processes and look for sunasserv and sunasdtserv and end them both then the program will be off.

B. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\smvalid.exe

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files, and DELETE them (if still present):

    C:\Windows\system32\mbsmon32.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\ubsauthenticateaxc.ocx
    C:\Windows\system32\axaccessctrl.ocx
    C:\Windows\system32\imvalid.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\imvalid.ico.bak0
    C:\Windows\system32\imvalid.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\mysexworld.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\u2g.f
    C:\Windows\system32\smvalid.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\winiconmon.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\winiconmon.ico.bak0
    C:\Windows\system32\sexxpassport.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\mbsreg.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\mbssm32.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\mbsrm32.exe

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren
Thanks to Trevuren for help to date. I think I've got half the job done (and the computer is running much faster as a result). I've failed to understand action 6. The action at 5 takes me to the start screen in safe mode. If I then use Windows Explorer this takes me to the 'My Computer' window. How do I then find the files in the display format that you show and with a delete option available. I appreciate your continued patience
OK. we will try this another way. Please disregard my previous post.

A. Please run HijackThis, produce a scan and place a checkmark beside the following item:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\smvalid.exe

Now with the item selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete it by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Windows\system32\mbsmon32.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\ubsauthenticateaxc.ocx
    C:\Windows\system32\axaccessctrl.ocx
    C:\Windows\system32\imvalid.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\imvalid.ico.bak0
    C:\Windows\system32\imvalid.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\mysexworld.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\u2g.f
    C:\Windows\system32\smvalid.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\winiconmon.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\winiconmon.ico.bak0
    C:\Windows\system32\sexxpassport.ico
    C:\Windows\system32\mbsreg.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\mbssm32.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\mbsrm32.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window
  • Choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Regards,

Trevuren
Trevuren

I followed that fine (no re-boot requested but I will do so shortly to see if any residual problems).

To get back to the original settings for the files and folders should I now reverse the settings left after action '!' in your first set of guidance?

To get back to the original settings for the files and folders should I now reverse the settings left after action '!' in your first set of guidance?

Answer: YES

I would like you to run this simple script to make sure that we get all of the infection, even the registry entries:

A. Save Microbill.bfu script
  • Open Notepad
  • Copy all the text contained in the below Codebox and Paste it into the open blank Notepad File:

  • Save the Notepad file to your desktop using the following name: Microbill.bfu and as "All Files" under Type

B. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".

C. Copy the Microbill.bfu file from your desktop into the C:\BFU folder that you just created.

D. Now Reboot your system into Safe Mode

E. Once in Safe Mode, go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon [external image: Posted Image] and select Microbill.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

F. Reboot into normal windows and post a fresh HJT log.

Trevuren
Trevuren Have tried to do as you say, but have probably misinterpreted your direction. I think I was OK down to Section C. I could not open the Microbill.bfu file in the desktop because it needed to know the pgrogram that created it (I could have simply selected the content earlier and copied it at that stage). I had, therefore, to right click upon it and choose copy then right click on the BFU folder and select paste. Going then to Section E, when I double-clicked on BFU.exe I did not immediately get the 'scriptline to execute' option, just the BFU icon. I double-clicked on this and only then saw this option. At this point, however, there were other actions offered or needed and I felt I would be likely to be going wrong. So following the standard advice given, I am asking for clarity or confimation as appropriate. Sorry to be such a bore over something that is doubtless very simple when you know how! David

I could not open the Microbill.bfu

There were no directions to try to open the .bfu file, just to name it. It is to be copied as a .bfu file into C:\BFU. The BFU program itself will only work with files that have a .bfu extension.

Please try it again.

Thanks,

Trevuren
Treverun I have tried again but without success. It seems that you are content with my right click copy from the Microbill.bfu and right click paste into the BFU folder, both actions done on the desktop. The problem comes when I go to the C:\BFU folder in safe mode. A double click on the folder opens it to show 2 icons; one is the Microbill.bfu zipped folder and the other is the BFU.exe. I doubleclick on the BFU.exe and then click Run (a stage not mentioned by you so I may already have gone wrong). At this point, I get the scriptline to execute field and I can click on the folder icon as directed. The problem is that there is nothing in it to select so I don't get the Execute option. I have tried to drag and drop/or paste the Microbill.bfu into the BFU.exe, but it remains empty. Sorry to be a pain, but I have clearly not done something as I should have, but I don't know what.

A double click on the folder opens it to show 2 icons; one is the Microbill.bfu zipped folder

The zipped folder is not supposed to be in C:\BFU folder, only BFU.exe and the Microbill.bfu file

Try it that way.

Trevuren
Trevuren

I've had another try. I deleted the ziped file and copied in the Microbill.bfu. I then doubleclickrd the BFU.exe, typed in the Microbill.bfu in the scriptline to execute field (it was empty to start with) and pressed Execute. The 'complete script execution' box popped up immediately, however, and with no sign of the progress bar, so I have probably done it wrong again.

In hope, I completed the sequence of instructions and the fresh HJT log is beneath.

You are nearly there. I think the small error you made this time is in what you typed. I think you were telling me that you typed "Microbill.bfu"?

If that is the case, then that is why the progress meter did not advance.

If you are going to type in the path of the file, you need to type the following:

C:\BFU\Microbill.bfu then click on "Execute"

Give it another try please.

Trevuren
Treverun I have done as you ask, but it made no difference i.e. same process as before, but with the full file path specified and still no progress meter. I have clearly made a mistake in interpreting your instructions, but do not know where or what. Should I clear all the entries to date from my desktop and start again from the start of your advice in Post #6 of Jun 30? Or is there another approach that we can try?
Trevuren
This time I might have managed it! Fingers crossed.
