Symantec has found several threats from this adware.purityscan virus.
Symantec has not been able to sucessuffly remove the problem and it keeps comming back (popus) and slow system.

Symantec has also found the trojan.vundo and seem to have fixed it.. but with all the popups I'm not sure what is broken!!!
I have run the Hijackthis file and have pasted the log below. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help

Hello RyanF and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem. Unfortunately your HijackThis log still shows signs of Vundo but before we start I would like you to please provide me with the following:

Please provide a list of uninstallable programs.

To Provide a List of Installed Programs
  • Run HijackThis.
  • Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
  • Save list to Desktop
  • Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.
As soon as I press the button to save the list Hijack this closes….. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Hijackthis Version 1.99.1 with no sucess. Is there another way to get you the list? BTW thanks for helping with my issues. I need the computer for work!!! I also have very slow startup, just another problem to add to the list. RyanF
We will try another method,

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  • An additional text file, Extra.txt, will also be available (by default) in the following FOLDER, C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
  • Please go to that FOLDER and also copy the contents of Extra.txt to your post as well.
Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

What DSS will do:

  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed.

Post Logs:
  • DSS Scan Results: contents of 1) Main.txt and 2) Extra.txt

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results"
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net
——————————————————————–
2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Thanks again for the help.

A. Using the Add/Remove Program module in your Control Panel, please UNINSTALL the following program. I have adjusted the script to remove any remnants of the program that may be left behind.

Viewpoint

or

Viewpoint Manager

Justification for the above can be found here, if needed: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/Cat-V.html

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\ActiveAct.INI

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nGpxx01
C:\Temp\cXzz9
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Driver::
aiptektp
IPSECEXT
r_server
IPSECSHM

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Ylubs"=-
"Tair"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"bascstray"=-
"UserFaultCheck"=-

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply after you re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
Please take note:

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

C. Finally, I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.

A. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the pull down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

B. All the infected items are in Quarantine and will be deleted during our final cleanup procedures. The following folders that I am asking you to delete do not contain malware but are leftovers from Viewpoint and I like to leave a machine as I leave mine:

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
Folders::
C:\Documents and Settings\ALL USERS\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan Flaherty\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\RYAN Flaherty\Application Data\Viewpoint

C. Finally, please tell me how your system is now running. It everything appears to be in order, we will proceed with the final cleanup procedures and recommendations.
I don’t think my computer has ever booted up or ran as fast as it is doing right now.
Symantec has not found any problems and all seems to be running great.
I'm ready for cleanup if the logs look good.

Thanks a million.
RyanF

There has been a slight problem with ComboFix which the author rapidly fixed. Those last folders are still present. Here are the directions to follow to delethem once and for all:

A: First we need to reveal hidden files:

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

B. Now, using Winndows Explorer (Windows Key + E), please locate and DELETE the following folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\ALL USERS\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan Flaherty\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\RYAN Flaherty\Application Data\Viewpoint

C. Now, please rehide Hidden files and folders by proceeding with the abov steps but in reverse.. Then tell me how things went and we will finish up.

Trevuren
C:\Documents and Settings\ALL USERS\Application Data\Viewpoint - Deleted
C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan Flaherty\Application Data\Viewpoint - Deleted
C:\Documents and Settings\RYAN Flaherty\Application Data\Viewpoint - Directory Does Not Exist

Computer is running good. The RYAN folder does not exist or at least is not visable.

Thanks,
RyanF
Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • A. Please DELETE the following folder and all its content from your system: C:\SDFix

    B. Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

    combofix /u

    [external image: Posted Image]

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:

    • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
    • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
    • IE-SpyAd - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. An installation tutorial is available here.

    • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
      • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
      • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
        Extract All from the menu.
      • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
        "Show Extracted files", click Finish
      • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
      • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
      • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
    • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

    • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
    • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

    • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

    • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

    • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
