[Judi]

OK, I've done a lot to try and get rid of what appears to be an adware.look2me infection. Norton, AVG, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender each find different things, but none of them can clean it up. Tried Vundofix, thinking it could be vundo, but it didn't find anything. Ran ewido and trojanhunter, although the manual update site for trojanhunter was down so I didn't get new definitions. I've never had so much trouble getting rid of something like this, and it's really starting to tick me off. So here is the hijack this log that I got after all of the things I tried. Please help!!!

OK, since it was taking a while to get an answer I did more searching and found the look2me destroyer. So I ran that, it got rid of some stuff, ran Norton AV, it got rid of some stuff, ran the look2me destroyer again and it got rid of some more stuff, and now it looks like I got it. Norton AV, AVG, Ad-Aware, Microsoft Defender, and Ewido all run clean. So, just to be sure I thought I would post my most recent HJT log and see if you guys think there is anything else I need to clean up.

Hello Judi, Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.



Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

OK, both before and after I did what you requested the computer was acting funny. It's sometimes not displaying all of the things it should in the systray. Sometimes it will boot up and everything will be there, other times only a couple things will be there. For instance, right now the icon for my Logitech mouse is not there.

Also every once in a while, at what seems like random intervals, the screen will go black for a second and then come back. My husband has noticed that a couple of times while he was playing Quake 3 today the display would get dim, as though the brightness had been turned down. He would have to get out of Quake to get the full brightness back. He's never experienced this with Quake before.

And my husband and I would like to say thank you for all of your help.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL



I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.

We did all that you suggested but we still get the monitor flicker and dimness. The icons seem to be where they are supposed to be, although we have only rebooted once to see. Anyways here is another logfile.

That could be your video card and / or monitor is going out. If you have another monitor try that first. When you are doing high graphics like a video game, that uses all the memory on the video card. It may also be your video card needs to be reseated. If it were my PC, I would get a can of canned air, remove the power, remove the cover, blow out the dust, remove the video card and reseat it back in the slot. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, take it to a computer repair shop.

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.





If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

We'll try reseating the graphics card. This computer is only 3 weeks old, so I doubt there's much, if any, dust in it, but if there is we'll take care of it. And we'll clear the restore points too, thanks, that's something I never would have thought to do. As for how it got infected, we already know that, and I don't think my husband will ever download a keygen again, which is a-ok with me! Luckily we have two computers and it didn't get spread to mine. We regularly use AVG and the Windows firewall in conjunction with the router firewall, so I'm pretty sure we're safe from infections not innitiated by us (like downloading keygens). And on the infected computer he runs spyware stuff all the time, and we both have AVG set to run every night, so we should be fine from here on out. Thanks so very much for all of your help. When AVG and Ad-Aware couldn't get rid of it my husband kinda panicked, lol. This board has been a lifesaver! So thanks again!!!

If that's the case, I'm not to sure I'd mess with it other then trying another monitor. Open / breaking any seals on the case could kill your warranty. You could have a defective Monitor or video card.

Well, it was too late for avoiding breaking any seals the day we swapped his CD-R/W for my DVD/CD-R/W, LOL. Anyway, we swapped our monitors and now we'll see if my monitor blinks on his computer or his monitor blinks on my computer. He's been wanted a flat panel anyway, using mine on his computer isn't going to lessen that desire We opened it up and it turns out I'm an idiot. his graphics are integrated on the motherboard, so there's nothing to re-seat. But we'll see how the new monitor works out. I'm sure he'll just be heartbroken if we have to replace his 17" CRT with a new flat panel

Turns out it wasn't the monitor. My monitor still blinked on his computer, and his is not blinking on my computer. So it is either the display drivers, which we've updated, or the onboard graphics. If it's the onboard ATI Radeon, then we'll have to take it in to get it fixed. Thanks again for all of your help.

That was the only time he noticed it. Since updating the drivers he's played Quake and it didn't dim, so maybe it was the driver.
