I am getting two icons in my system tray next to my clock that are saying "Your computer is infected with spyware/adware. Click here to download a program to remove them."

While running adaware it gets half way through before going to the "blue-screen-of-death" and Spybot gets to the end of the scan but when you click on "fix" it goes to the "blue-screen-of-death".

One of the icons is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it and the other is a red shield with and X in it that changes every second to a blue shield with a question mark. I was able to catch a screencap of the message the alternating icon in my system tray shows every few minutes.

I just reformatted my computer two days ago and now this shows up. I haven't downloaded anything since the reformat except for the standard programs like OpenOffice, Mozilla, Adaware, AVG, and HijackThis.

This is the HijackThis logfile.

Hi Volka,

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Now reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

  • Open the extracted SDFix folder (usually Start->My Computer->C:->SDFix and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

You appear to have no antivirus software running. Without antivirus software your computer is very vulnerable and can easily be infected at any time so it it is essential you have one active at all times.

There are several free packages available, two of the most popular are here:
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/
Avast!: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

If you have no antivirus program then download and install one immediately, update the definitions and set it to update automatically.
Please ensure you have one antivirus program installed before continuing

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the SDFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Do you still need help with your machine? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.
