Totally my fault, my error. I clicked on an ActiveX installation that I knew was untrustworthy, and upon completion, my problems began immediately.

There is now a new icon in my system tray that I cannot get rid of. It is an alternating shield wich flips from being a white "X" on a red shield, to being a white "?" on a blue shield. Hovering the mouse over the icon shows nothing, even though the other icons shows the program name (such as the date and time). Every couple of minutes an alert window pops up from it saying:
"System Alert!
System has dected a number of active spyware applications that may impact the performance of your computer. Click the icon to get rid of unwanted spyware by downloading an up-to-date antispyware solution."

If I right-click that icon, thinking to access a popup menu to disable it, what happens instead is a new browser window opens to URL http://www.virusprotectpro.com/?aff=1012

Things I have done so far:
1. I browsed the "Self Help Fixes for Malware", "Security Related Self Help Tutorials", "Other Computer Problems", and "HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal" topics/forums to see if there was a way to recoginze which problem this really was, and perhaps how to remove it. I found nothing that appeare to be the same problem, yet.

2. I did everything in the "Before Posting A Hijackthis Log "self Help", For Windows 2000 and XP Versions" topic:
- Installed and ran ATF Cleaner
- Installed, update and ran Spybot (it said it fixed several Zlob.VideoActiveXObject entries in various places, along with a SpyLocked.FakeAlert entry. All total 17 entries fixed)
- Installed and update Ad-Aware (instructions did not say to activate since there is no canned setup/test for the new version yet)
- Installed and ran AVG Anti-Spyware (it said it quarantined some Adware.Generic, Adware.Qworke, Downloader.Zlob.bww, and cleaned three tracking cookies)

I am still getting the system tray popup, but now it is only every few minutes, rather than constantly being displayed, and my IE browser no longer has the home page changed to whatever it was sent to (about:blank), I reset it, and it seems to be staying on my selection.

HijackThis log follows:

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (while in Safe Mode). Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
2. Once in Safe Mode, double-click Smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete the infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

3. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed as follows:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.

4. Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

5. Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

6. Run SmitfraudFix. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer YES to the question "Restore Trusted Zone?" by Typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

7. Please Post the following logs:
  • c:\rapport.txt
  • A new HijackThis log
Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Regards,

Trevuren
As of this reboot, the popup is gone from the System Tray.

I followed all the steps precisely, except for the following:
Step 3. "Clean out your Temporary Internet files" buttons were a little different:
There was no "Reset Web Settings" button on the Programs tab.
The Programs tab contained Internet Programs section (no buttons), a Default Web Browser section (with a greyed-out Make Default button), and a Manage add-ons section with a similar-named button).
I found a "RESET…" button on the Advanced tab, under "Reset Internet Explorer Settings section. I used that.

Step 4. When I went to Display Properties, then Customize Desktop, then Web tab, there is nothing regarding Security info that I could find, nor anything similar. This is what was there:
Buttons for "New…", "Delete", "Properties", (both Delete and Properties were greyed-out), and "Synchronize".
I could not find anything related to Security info on the preceeding pages, so I simply exited out.

Here is the rapport.txt:

A. Please disable AVG AntiSpyware by opening the program and on the Status page - beside "Resident Shield" click on "change status" so that it says "inactive" for it may interfere with our HJT fix.
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when all our work is finished.

B. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE
    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

Good Morning.
So far things look great.

You asked me to tell you about any other malware I might be aware of. I don't think this is malware, but I have been trying to figure out how to stop my Adobe Photo Downloader from loading a system tray icon. It was installed with my new printer, I believe, and it's useless to me since I have never used it. If this doesn't fall in your support category, I can understand. I simply find it annoying that something installed a utility that I cannot disable from running.

Here is a fresh HijackThis, after having fixed those five selections:

So far, I have been impressed with this site. I have been referring anyone here who mentions malware problems to me. You guys are very good at this, and I like how the system is set up.
Thank you.
Trilo
Sorry, I can't get much info on that one.

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

Thank you, Trevuren, I don't believe I see any other "malware" issues at the moment.
The only extra thing I have done is that since my last post, I took back control of my IE web browser homepage, and set it to CBC News.
Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Please DELETE Malicious Items from the AVG AntiSpyware Quarantine

A. Open AVG AntiSpyware by double clicking its icon located in the System Tray down by the clock.

B. Click on "Infections" on the AVG AntiSpyware Toolbar, then select the "Quarantine Tab"

C. Choose "Select All" at the bottom of the AVG AntiSpyware window, then click on the "Remove Finally" button and EXIT the program.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren
All done, up to and including the system restore point. The tips will also be followed too. Thank you again, for a very quick and accurate reply.
