Hi Guys

Newbie, so please be gentle! My PC appears to have picked up some malware which opens "your computer is infected with spyware, download our product now to remove it" pop-ups which open every 30 mins or so. If I click through, it offers me the option of buying one of two products to fix it.

I've tried various 'self help' options from this and other forums, but can't seem to shift it.

Here's a HijackThis log I've just taken, and I'd really value some assistance with this troublesome item.

Many thanks in anticipation

Nick

Hello Nick

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum, you do have some issues going on, lets do a few things.

Your version of HJT is outdated and may not be showing everything so uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and then download and install the latest version by Trendmicro.
C:\Program Files\Hijackthis <--Then delete this folder if still present

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I need you to run these programs in the order that I am listing them, after you run the last program ( Combofix ) post the logs for each program and then a new HJT log

Download VundoFix to your desktop

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

This is what I need to see.
1. Vundofix log
2. Malwarebytes log
3. Combofix log
4. New HJT log

Thank you Nick, It may be easier if you do it this way, use the links I provided in my previous post. 1. Download Vundofix to your desktop. <-- No installation needed 2. Download and install Malwarebytes, check for updates and then close the program, don't run it yet 3. Download Combofix to your Desktop < -- No installation is needed but its important that it is downloaded to your desktop. 4. Run Vundofix and post the report 5. Run Malwarebytes and post the report 5. Run Combofix and post the report 6. Then post a new HJT log when your done with all the scans, 7. Take your time, I check in to this site quite regularly. Ken :)

Hello Nick,

Your doing so well  A bit more to do.

Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above File::

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zwhsjkfi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fejkjgfc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wzktezwl.exe

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"xsbdxwij"=-
"vlzggtyg"=-
"lgqalmcp"=-

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

I don't know if it's relevant to whatever nasty thing has infected my PC, but I've also noticed I've 'lost' the Search facility! If I click 'Start' and then 'Search' I just get a blank box like this

Posted Image

I don't know what's doing it, and as ever would welcome your assistance!

Many thanks

Nick

Hello Nick,

Not sure about the search box, sometimes malware leaves behind some damage. When your clean if it still won't work I can direct you to a windows forum that deals with issues like that.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [jmenjxcd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lapqbktm.exe G
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [HpoAI25eMY] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\hcxodsnw\tolexcxa.exe

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Delete these files
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lapqbktm.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\hcxodsnw

Post a new HJT log and let me know how your system is doing .

Ken :)

Hi Ken

I did the HijackThis bits, and also included another Windows\system32 file - nyntytq.exe, which I recognised as being the latest incarnation of the lapqbktm.exe file.

I then deleted nyntytq.exe and lapqbktm.exe (had to use the File Assassin facility in Malwarebytes' as the files were otherwise 'locked'), but couldn't find hcxodsnw within the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ folder.

Hello Nick,

Your log looks fine

Run this free System Cleaner, its yours to keep, I run it on my own systems a few times a month.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

How is your system running now ? Are you still having issues with the Search feature ?

Hi Ken

Computer now appears to be malware free, for which many, many thanks.

Unfortunately my Search feature is still not working, so if you could recommend a good Windows forum where I could seek advice, that would be great.

Finally, I've just made a small PayPal donation towards keeping this site going - please keep up the excellent service you offer.

All the best

Nick

Hello Nick,

Thanks for the donation, it just goes to keep us online. This forum like all the other malware removal forums are staffed by volunteers so any donation big or small is much appreciated.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0.0.13 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Glad we could help

Safe Surfn
Ken
