Hiya

I've got an annoying pop-up which keeps appearing - it says : "Warning: Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files. Run full scan now to pervent unathorized access to your files. Click YES to download spyware remover...". It only started today, but I'm sure I need to get rid of it. Help!! I've set out the HijackThis logfile below. I'm really grateful for any help at all which you can give me. Thanks in advance!

Poltwhistle (David Cookson)

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Smitfraud by S!ri

______________________________

  • Double clcik the smitfraud.exe
  • When promted
    Press any key to continue.
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. When prompted by allow it to run

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!
If you do and smitfraud isn't present it will have undesirable effects

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste these filepaths: 1 at a time.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sol698.txt

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustota...l/index_en.html

Hiya I've got the report from Smitfraud, but am having trouble getting through to both Jottis and also Virustotal. Are there any alternatives, or should I just keep trying? All the best Poltwhistle (David)

What problems are you having getting through to Jottis and VT ? Please post the other things I have asked for and tell me where the problem lies in connecting to those sites.

Hiya

Here are (1) a new HJT log, (2) the report from Smitfraud, and (3) the text of the webpage I reach when I go through to both Jottis and Virustotal : it looks like a standard error page to me. There's nothing wrong with the rest of my internet connectivity, and it's just these two sites I can't reach. I've separated each of the three items with a line of asterisks. Thank you once again (very much indeed!) for all your help.

Poltwhistle (David)

I see why you probably can't get to those sites.
Your host file has been corrupted by malware. We'll fix that as well.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
___________________________________
Download AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.
  • At the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
[*]The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
[*]When updates are completed, close AVG.
[/list]If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.
AVG manual updates
Do not use it yet.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

OK everything looks pretty good.
I can't find any info on this file.

Unless you know what it is we should have it scanned.

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste these filepaths: 1 at a time.

C:\01tbjcho.zip

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustota...l/index_en.html

You need to update SunJava for security reasons.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3

  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
... allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe

Hiya

Here's the latest HijackThis log. I don't need to have C:\01tbjcho.zip scanned - it's a .zip file I created (containing the chorus material from Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Trial by Jury in MIDI format ... I know, don't ask!!). I've installed the latest version of Java.

Everything seems to be OK now, but please don't desert me! I'll come running to you if anything similar occurs in the future (I hope it won't). Let me know if you need any other info from me.

How do I go about paying you?

All the best

Poltwhistle (David)

Great news ! Posted Image

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

__________________________________

Please delete the smitfraudfix.exe and the smifraud folder on your desktop.

__________________________________________
Go to start > run and copy and paste this in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the
system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

A few things to help with possible threats

These are optional . But will help protect you further.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.
