Hi Guys,

I have a PC that the BIL has done something to, not admitting anything, you know how it goes.with the comment "it just stopped working properly". He was only getting on it to "check the real estate websites" though I know that's not the case as he was logged into msn messager and who knows what else.

The PC started having problems when he was using it.
Now that I have it the symptoms are:
On start up there is a short moment where it appears that the video driver is not working correctly as there is a few funny lines on a black screen before it goes into Vista startup.
I log on as per normal and it does it fairly quickly.

Once I log on, I start getting popup error msgs about missing files and a WordPerfect Registration popup.

I removed the HDD and attached it to my working Win XP Laptop and Norton 360 came up with a bunch of Error msgs relating to Vundo infection.

I let it take care of them, and reinstalled the HDD after a reboot.
Now when I log in it comes up with
Error loading C:\users\username\Appdata\Local\Temp\kkxwfbcp.dll
Error loading C:\users\username\Appdata\Local\Temp\gebcy.dll
Error loading C:\users\username\Appdata\Local\Temp\wvctnggx.dll
Error loading C:\users\username\Appdata\Local\Temp\hgday.dll

And a final popup saying the Recycle Bin on C:\ is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?

I looked around for a Vundo Fix but it appears it's only good for 2000/XP not Vista. This machine has Home Premium on it.

Hi Schotty,

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis from here:
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTInstall.exe

Once you have downloaded the new version, remove the old version via Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features and then use Windows Explorer (right-click Start & select Explore) to delete the old program file:

C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Then run the new version's installer HJTInstall.exe and follow the prompts.
After installing, HijackThis will open automatically, close the program for now.

————————————————————————

Next, download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Right-click SmitfraudFix.exe and select Run as administrator
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

————————————————————————

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Do you still need help with your machine? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.
