Hi, I'm having a problem downloading from servers. For example, i am trying to install Spybot on the pc and during installation the message box says it is connecting to server to download then a few seconds later i get an error message saying "unable to connect to server" and installation fails. This happens on many applications like Emule (cant update servers), F-Secure (cant download updates), Itunes (cant connect to Itunes store) to name but a few. I can however download installation (.exe) files, its just whenever the software tries to connect to their host website or something. Any suggestions please ?

Hi JonHoggy

Sounds like your firewall is blocking the out-bound calls from those applications.

What Firewall you using?

Hi, i should have mentioned, it cant be the firewall, i have disabled Windows firewall and i have unistalled the firewall i was using as i was going to replace it with another, but am faced with the same problem, so currently only AVG anti-virus is running.

My pc is connected to a Netgear router, could the router be stopping this ?
What i dont understand is im able to download the installation files no problem, the errors start when the software tries
to connect to their web servers to install updates.

Cheers

Jon

Hi Jonhoggy

First off, its extremely important that you have a Firewall running!! Its not adviceable to turn it off. At the very least you should have windows own running, till you get a better in place!!

Some routers have an firewall (Its still adviceable to have a software firewall running), see if there should be some settings there.

Also, what model of the Netgear router do you have? I could be troubleshooting a dusin different routers, and not "hitting" the one you use.

I'm on my work pc at the mo so i will look at the firewall settings on the router tonight, but i am pretty sure i have looked at this and allow all is checked. I only disabled firewall when trying to connect to these servers, normally it is running ! The Netgear router model is DG834G. Cheers, Jon

Hi Jonhoggy

Ok. Be sure to check the outbound policies for the firewall, which is where I belive its going wrong.

If you don't have access to a manual, the manual for DG834G can be found here LINK…Heres the section dealing with outbound policies, LINK

Hi still no luck. Ive set the Firewall services to allow ALL inbound and outbound traffic on the router, but i still get the error message "unable to establish a connection with the server" :(
Hi Jonhoggy OK, well i'm kinda baffled then. If the policies are good, and you have normal connection, I can't see where it goes wrong then. Does windows updates go through allright? If you plug in it directly to you computer, does the problem still exist? You might try reset the router, not sure if it will solve the problem, but it might eliminate a false/wrong setting somewhere. Just be sure to try plug it in directly before this step. If it doesn't work that way, it aint the router thats the problem. Other than that, i'm at a loss here. So maybe one more wised in the realm of wireless router have a solution. Sorry that i can't be of more help than that. Regards Abydos
