Ran ATF, and Spybot already.

Symptoms include slower applications, internet explorer won’t open unless used through a regular folder window, multiple corrupted drivers (media center functions, some program device drivers). Boot up remains about the same speed though, not affected too much. Mainly loading applications is what is the biggest problem. Even browsing web pages has slowed down significantly. McAfee detected the Generic.dx virus but wasn't able to delete or remove the "C:\windows\system32\urqqrrs.dll". Even after a re-scan and re-boot the file comes back after removal and is detected immediately after startup.

Hi! Welcome to the WTT forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please remove the version of HijackThis you have on computer then follow the next instructions.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply
Thanks for the prompt reply Scotty. And I will be sure to remain plenty patient, I just appreciate any help that's given so it will be no problem. I did as you requested and have the logs pasted below. Thanks again for your help.

Hi

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back in your next reply.

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

Forospyware
Geeks to Go

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.

In your next reply post:
Report.txt
ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log taken after the above scan has run
Well things seem to have improved a bit after that last round of fixes. IE opens regularly, and McAfee doesn't detect any trojans anymore. This is good news. So far this has been very helpful, thank you very much. The log files you requested are pasted below.

Hi

Unfortunately your log shows signs of a rootkit being present on your system. This means your PC is at risk now and sadly may always be.
A rootkit is a collection of tools (programs) that enable administrator-level access to a computer or computer network. Typically, a hacker installs a rootkit on a computer after first obtaining user-level access, either by exploiting a known vulnerability or cracking a password. Once the rootkit is installed, it allows the attacker to mask intrusion and gain root or privileged access to the computer and, possibly, other machines on the network.

Rootkits may also have what is known as a backdoor. The backdoor, if present, will give complete remote access to your system. This means someone will be able to steal any information stored on your PC including addresses, names and telephone numbers and more worryingly passwords, bank account details and any other financial information, basically they will have access to any data that you do.

At this point you have 2 options :-

OPTION 1

We attempt to remove the rootkit but will never really know if it is completely removed which means all the above applies.
There will be no guarantees with this option.

OPTION 2

We reformat your system.
This will destroy the rootkit but means you will have to reinstall everything.

My advice would be OPTION 2 It is the only safe, effective and positive way of dealing with this type of infection.
It will also be much quicker to reformat/reinstall than to attempt the removal.

I would like you to read the information over and when you have decided which option to choose post back and I will gladly assist with what ever route you choose to take.
Well I was afraid that something like that may still be present. Luckily I don't connect this machine to the net very often. I will begin the process of backing up all my important files and then proceed with a full format. Do you recommend a full low-level format as well or just the regular windows format? I am very familiar with this process and recently assisted a friend with the same thing when he caught a nasty virus that seized his entire machine. I have all my recovery disks, so it shouldn't be a problem. It will take me a day or two to back up all my files onto dvd's or another drive. I just want to say thanks though for getting machine running better to complete the backup process. I start the format process shortly and stay tuned if you have any advice regarding low-level formats. Thanks again for taking the time to help. Ben
Hi

In this case it is better to do a low level format, or a Destructive format, as some call it. Wipe the drive clean. It's always best to thoroughly scan whatever you back up before installing it back into the new system.

Another point I should make is one of the infections was Vundo, the variation which infects the start up programs. Best not to back up any applications. Data and pictures etc, should be okay.

I will leave you a few pointers for when you are up and running again.

Here are two free programs I recommend.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here . Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
Thank you very much for the advice. I figured a low-level would be the best option as well. I really do appreciate all you assitance even though a hdd format was the end result. The computer is atleast stable enough to back up my files before formatting, and for that I am grateful. Once again I greatly appreciate your time and attention to my issues as well as being very prompt with your replies. I wish you and your staff the best, and with luck hopefully I won't be contacting you any more problems any time soon. Thanks. Ben
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
