Well, I'm no expert with computers but I know that getting a blue screen isn't a good sign...

I haven't had my computer that long, less than a couple of months, but the last couple of weeks I've been having a few problems playing videos. Well, when I say a few problems, I mean that I can't. Whenever I load up a video I get a blue screen saying.. Err... Something about emptying files, or something like that. Given that I've seen it so many bloody times now, you'd think that I would be able to remember! This kicks in straight away, about half a second after the video starts, every time. I've run videos with DivX, Quicktime and WMP and I always get the same thing... It just seemed to happen overnight.

I was curious as to whether it's a hardware problem, being that my computer is new, or if it's infected... Saying that, videos worked fine for the first month and a half, so...

Yeah. Any help is really appreciated!

Edit: Oh, and I ran a Bullguard, Adaware and Spybot system scan and they found nothing of any merit.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Nothing bad jumps out but lets see if we can eliminate any bad guys.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Everything looks good to me. Did you download anything that might have started the Blue Screens, like video codec?

I downloaded something from www.metacafe.com so that I could download videos from there. That's all I can think of recently. I uninstalled it after the problem started, as I did everything except WMP that I had used to play videos. I got the impression that something had been corrupted because, around the same time as the blue screens, my browser was crashing every time I opened any page that used quicktime. I uninstalled quicktime and that seemed to fix it. The browser problem, anyway. Cheers again.

Right, I installed WMP 11 and still no joy. The blue screen that I'm getting says "IRQL NOT LESS OR RQUAL", and that it's dumped physical memory and such.

... No idea what that means, to be honest. But it's pretty frustrating. Do you think that I'll have to get in touch with the manufacturer, or is there anything else that you suggest looking at that could be causing this?

Again, many thanks.

Oh, and I looked at the file types in WMP. Nothing really stuck out to me, but to be honest I wasn't too sure what I was looking for.

Do this first.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

After the above post the errors you're having here: (start a new topic)
