The computer owner installed Norton System WOrks over top of our Symantec Corp AV - that has been resolved
Corporate AV produced scan results showing viruses, trojans and a rootkit. None could be repaired but all were all to be deleted.
Spybot and Adaware both found spyware and malware including smitfraud. Both programs were able to remove all results without any problems.
My final problem was the computer hanging during restart/shutdown at the "saving your settings" screen. After some brutal Microsoft reading and registry tweaks, and changing the way users logon, apparently it's fixed (no clue what actually did it though after about a hundred shutdowns).
At this point everything seems fine, but I'd llike to be sure before shipping back to the owner.
