a friend of mine has a lovely little Emachines 5240 containing the highly desirable D915GVWB Mainboard. When he bought the PC 3 years ago (pretty much to the day) he opted to get an ATI sapphire X700 Hybrid graphics card, one of the first PCI Express graphics cards to be available. However 2 days ago the fan on the GPU fell off, taking the ability to play games with it. What he wants to do is to purchase a new graphics card and has been looking at ATI's 3870 due to its cost and performance, however all Graphics cards these days seem to specify a requirement for a PCI express *16 slot (which this particular motherboard does not have). Sadly after days trawling through forums i havent found the answer to "will a PCIE *16 graphcis card work in a PCIE *1 slot. I'm aware that due to the nature of the slot there would be a performance hit on any graphics card that he purchases, but when your only other option is a new micro ATX motherboard (which kinda dents into the graphics card fund) what else can you do! hope someone out there has tried what im trying to do thanks
