I began the prescribed steps, and whence removing Adobe Acrobat items via Control Panel's "add/remove programs" section, a final Adobe item would not or could not be removed.

Upon rebooting numerous times, the Add/Remove programs window no longer populates; it just hangs open and does nothing, and doesn't allow me to close it either.

Thanks again for your help, and for reopening this topic.

UPDATE: At one boot, I had a "dr. watson" related error message, but it hasn't repeated itself.
-Windows update icon appears in lower right, but progress remains at zero percent.

Hi,
Sorry to hear of the problem with your Add and Remove programs not populating.
This is usually caused by some damage to your Registry, so the repair will need you to be confident in working with the Registry.

FIRST please back up your Registry before you do anything else then set up a System Restore Point as well
(Post back here if you need instructions on this)
SECOND ensure that your backup of all your important stuff on your computer (Yes everything!) is 100% up to date, accurate and reproducible. Even if your back up is only a day or two out of date, take the opportunity now to update it.

Now for the fix, please go here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/…668/EN-US/?#kb1

Follow the instructions carefully and I strongly recomment that you use "copy and paste" rather than attempting to type in the commands (as a space in the wrong place or a dot where it should not be, will stop the procedures executing.
Let us know how you go.
Regards
