Hi RatHat. Sorry I left out the scan info. It detected one infection (ad_aware) which it said it removed. But I ran the scan twice and this was detected the 2nd time. As far as the P2P goes, since my PC has been infected once, are there traces of the malware still on my PC which might be triggered when using a P2P? If so, is there no way of removing the malware permanently? How about a complete format and clean reinstall of the OS? Regards, Sang

If so, is there no way of removing the malware permanently?
How about a complete format and clean reinstall of the OS?

A reformat is the last thing that I want you to have to do! Malware can be cleaned from a system in all but a very small percentage of cases, and those are with a particularly nasty bug that you have no signs of having.

Your log is almost done by the looks of it, so lets see if we can complete it without your having to reformat ;)

Download avz4.zip from here
  • Save it to your desktop and unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Choose from the menu "File" then "Standard Scripts"
  • Put a check next to item 2: Advanced System Investigation
  • Click Execute selected scripts
  • At the next prompt, click the OK button
  • Let the scan run and click "OK" when the completion prompt pops up
  • Now Close out of the Standard Scripts window, and exit AVZ
  • Navigate to the avz4 folder and locate the folder LOG
  • Inside the LOG folder you will find virusinfo_syscheck.htm and virusinfo_syscheck.zip
  • Attach virusinfo_syscheck.htm to your next reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

RatHat
Hey RatHat,

1. Attached is virusinfo_syscheck.htm. It's zipped as the file was larger than the 250K limit.
I viewed it myself and I wonder if you can tell me what all those file listed under the "Hosts file records" section is?
It contains what appears to be IP addresses all starting with 127.0.0.1 and an address such as www.007guard.com.

2. I also ran Spybot out of curiosity and it"s still returning the same results (as it has in the past) for files it has detected as infections
which are repaired, only to return again. The list is below. Could they be a problem later or should I not worry about them?
I am a bit concerned as three of the items are located in the registry.

Hey Sang,

This is part of the hosts file on your system. The hosts file lists known bad sites, and should your browser try to access them (from a hidden link on a website, say) then the hosts file redirects it back to your own computer; 127.0.0.1 This way you are stopped from inadvertantly being sent to a site that may try to install some nasties on your system.

The good thing is that AVZ did not turn up anything new!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK, the remaining files can now be deleted:
Run OtMoveIt again:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\bglsxsbm.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\cvojclml.dll
Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Open Notepad, and copy everything in the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy).
  • Save the Notepad file to your Desktop as OTM.txt.
  • Close OTMoveIt
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
Please include the contents of OTM.txt in your next reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now onto the items in your registry. I do not think they are anything to wory about as they are in your user hive as opposed to the Local Machine or Current User hives, however we'll have a look at them to see what they contain:

Please download RegQuery by Noviciate to your desktop
  • Copy the following registry keypath by highlighting the text an pressing CTRL and C at the same time
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1302894578-2583683610-24665327-1006\Software\mwc]
  • Double click RegQuery.exe to run the program
  • Paste the text you have copied using CRTL and V, into the textbox
  • Click the Query button
  • A Notepad file will open. Save that file to your desktop and include it in your next reply.
  • Do the same for the following keys:
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1302894578-2583683610-24665327-1006\Software\wkey]
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1302894578-2583683610-24665327-1006\Software\Microsoft\MsSC2]
  • You may now close the RegQuery program

Let me know if you are having any problems or have any more wories.

Regards,
RatHat
Hey RatHat, Below is the OTM.txt results File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\bglsxsbm.dll not found. File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\cvojclml.dll not found. Created on 12/13/2007 14:45:08 However, I had an issue with the pasting of registry paths. I would paste and hit the query button, but I only received a message stating to "Check Key Name". No Notepad opened up. It's as if it didn't recognize it. This occurred for all three entries. Regards. Sang
Hey Sang,

Then the registry keys are not there, and I would not be concerned about them. The same goes for the files that OTMoveIt reported as not being found.

Other than that, your log is clean! :thumbup:

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Click the Clean up button
Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
Click Yes to the reboot.

Also delete the folder avz4 and all it's contents. By deleting these you will be sure of having the latest updated fixes, should you need help again in the future.

Before we go though, lets carry out a few preventative steps to make sure you reduce the risk of further infections.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all lets Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected, but that's good news).
Turn OFF System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.
Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next, lets reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

Reset Hidden/System Files & Folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another essential is to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system patches and security fixes. Windows Updates are constantly being revised to combat the newest hacks and threats, Microsoft releases security updates that help your computer from becoming vunerable. It is best if you have these set to download automatically.
Automatic Updates for Windows
  • Click Start.
  • Select Settings and then Control Panel.
  • Select Automatic Updates.
  • Click Automatic (recommended)
  • Choose a day and a time when you know the computer will be on and connected to the internet.
  • Click Apply then OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next lets check the security of important software to see whether you need to download any additional updates.

Program Updates
  • Go to the Secunia Software Inspector website
  • Click the Start Now button, allow the Java applet to load, and open to the scan page
  • Make sure you check the Enable thorough system inspection located under the Start button
  • Click the Start button to run the scan (this will take about five minutes)
  • When the scan has completed, read the report and update your programs as shown
Note: Links to the program updates are included in the report

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK, now lets download some preventative programs that will help to keep the nasties away! We will start with Anti Spyware programs. You can run all of these at the same time without any problem or conflicts, so I would advise getting all of them.
Anti Spyware
  • AVG Anti Spyware to remove any spyware infecting your computer.
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nearly done! If you like to use chat, MSN and Yahoo have vunerabilities that can leave you open to infections. There are however a couple of very good, Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN):

Instant Messengers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lastly, it is a good idea to clear out all your temp files every now and again. This will help your computer from bogging down and slowing. It also can assist in getting rid of files that may contain malicious code that could re-infect your computer.

Temp File Cleaners
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Note: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition.
  • ATF Cleaner A very powerful cleaning program for XP and Windows 2000 only. Note: You may have this already as part of the fixes you have run.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will keep this log open for the next couple of days, so if you have any further problems post another reply here.
OK, all the best, and stay safe!
Best regards,
RatHat
Hi RatHat, It's nice to hear that the logs are coming up clean! I followed pretty much all the steps you've listed except for the chat stuff. My PC seems to have been born again! Everything is responding as it should. I'd like to thank you very much for all the time, effort and knowledge that you so generously gave.
