My PC has been performing slow. IE opens up random new windows of ads for school, dating and the likes.
I've been browsing around and it clearly looks like I'm infected. I have all the "classic" files being listed by others
as viruses. They are the vondo, vundo, download.mislead and a host of others, but the main culprit seems to be a scprot4.exe file
which is related to all the pop-up security balloons in the taskbar requesting I sign up for their "ultimate cleaner".

I have Norton (Symnatec) and with the recommendation of others have installed Spybot alongt with Ad-Aware.
All three detect different files to be removed only to reappear later. I've only had this laptop for a few months now and this is really annoying.
Please can someone offer some assistance? Thank You

Hi there,

Welcome to WhattheTech. My name is RatHat, and I will help you get through the process of cleaning the malware from your computer.

OK firstly, I need you to print out each post I make so that you can refer to it while we fix your computer. This is because there will be times when you are unable to be online to read my instructions, and I will want you to do everything very carefully. I also need you to follow my instructions in the order that they are given. If however, you cannot carry out one of them, please continue on with the next and let me know what you were unsuccessful with.

Next, I would like to make sure that you can view hidden files and folders;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now you have some files that I cannot find out any details on, so lets get them up to the Anti Virus people so they can analyse them:
Please go here to upload the suspicious files for analysis.
  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread: http://forums.whatthetech.com/Im_infected_please_help_t86199.html#
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 1, copy and paste the following: C:\Program Files\kbwrknot\yrwnalan.dll
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 2, copy and paste the following: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\szotybyb.dll
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 3, copy and paste the following: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\whodsjgd.dll
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 4, copy and paste the following: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\urgbeler.dll
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 5, copy and paste the following: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\bglsxsbm.dll
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 6, copy and paste the following: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\cvojclml.dll
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
There are a couple more to upload so lets do the same again:
Go back to Upload Malware
  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread: http://forums.whatthetech.com/Im_infected_please_help_t86199.html#
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 1, copy and paste the following: C:\Program Files\Omldwsjc\fclputgj.dll
    • In File(s) to Submit, box 2, copy and paste the following: C:\WINDOWS\system32\nlfgasdp.dll
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After that, download VundoFix from HERE to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally, I would like you to rename HijackThis.exe to Sang.exe The reason for this, is that some malware, particularly Vundo, will hide from any scan run by HijackThis.exe, rename it and it fools it!
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • Locate HijackThis.exe (it's icon is a stick of dynamite and a plunger)
  • Right click on the file, and from the pop out menu choose: Rename
  • Rename it to Sang.exe
Don't forget to update any links on your desktop to the file.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So in your next post, please include the following:
  • The contents of vundofix.txt
  • A fresh HijackThis (Sang.exe) log

Regards,
RatHat
Hi RatHat,

Thank you so much for volunteering to help me.
I really appreciate it.

1. Hidden files are being shown and the two HIDE options are unchecked.

2. I pasted all the files as indicated, however, it seems that a bunch of them had 0 bytes and could not be uploaded. See results below

Hey Sang,

The WinPFind log is not attached, could you try attaching it again, and/or copy and paste it into a post (or two). Be aware when posting that the last line of the log must be < End of Report >, if it is not, you will need to split the log into two or more posts.

Regards,
RatHat
Hey there,

I must've neglected to hit the "upload" button.
Sorry about that, here it is.

No problem! OK lets see if we can get rid of this thing.

Start WinPFind3U. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.

Post that information back here along with a new WinPFind3u scan and a fresh HijackThis log.

Let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

Regards,
RatHat
Hi RatHat,

THe Runfix and WinPFind3.Txt are below. Fresh Hijack file is attached.
During the Runfix, Norton alerts popped up as it has done in the past
warning that it has detected a virus "Trojan.vundo" and that it would remove it as usual.

Hi there,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [evsfylkr] rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\kbwrknot\yrwnalan.dll",Init
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bglsxsbm] regsvr32 /u "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\bglsxsbm.dll"

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis. Reboot.

Next please get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Re-Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Also let me know how your computer is running, and whether you are still having any problems.

Regards,
RatHat
Hi RatHat, Even before our last correspondence, the PC had been performing a lot better. It boots up much much quicker than before. It logs and logs off users considerably quicker. Hey Sang,

Well your log is liiking clean now, however I like to stay on the safe side, so lets run an online scan to see if there is any more rubbish hiding in there:

Before we do though, update to the latest version here (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3). Once downloaded, install it and then Reboot your computer.

It is most important that you also uninstall older versions of Java.
  • Click Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
  • Delete all Java updates except Java ™ 6 Update 3

Now for the online scan:

TrendMicro™ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.

If you have problems running the Java Scan, try the Active X scan:

TrendMicro™ HouseCall ActiveX Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.

P2P programs are an easy way for virus writers to spread their goods, so I would highly recommend getting rid of Ares 2.0.9 as this is very likely the root cause of your infection.

Regards,
RatHat
Hi RatHat, Scan has been run and the new Java was updated and old ones removed. The system seemed really slow performing both operations. Also, the Ares was working fine previously on another PC and I've read elsewhere that amongst the P2P, Ares was safe, unlike Kazaa. Nevertheless, I have removed it for now. Regards, Sang
Hey Sang, Did the scan find anything? And how is your computer doing now? No P2P program is really safe, as you share files with others that you can never be certain are safe. Also once a computer is infected the malware can use the P2P program to download additional nasties. It is great to be able to download some things, but the dangers far outweigh the benefits. I would steer clear of any P2P program personally. Regards, RatHat
