My PC has been infested with adware for some time. I am not sure where it has come from but several people use this machine. Mostly the problem is pop-ups which are always the same. CaselMedia DealHelper Hot Flash Games etc. I have done several scans both with Spybot and Hijack this. The last scan with Spybot claimed to have removed all but two problems and I was able to remove one of those in add/remove programmes. However I am sure there must still be lots of malicious stuff so I have rebooted and am posting my latest scan in the hope that some kind person will take a look and advise me what else I should remove. Thanks in advance.

Hello Eric and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You have People OnPage on your computer. If you registered with People OnPage, you'll need to unregister before removing it.

To unregister, sign in to POP! with the email address and password of the profile you are unregistering. Click the Controls button on the POPBAR and choose My Account from the menu that displays. When the My Account page opens, click the Registration Information link. When the Change Registration page opens, click the Unregister from POP! link. When the Unregistration page opens, enter your email address and password and choose whether you want to unregister from POP! Dating or from POP! Completely, then click the Unregister button.

To remove People OnPage:
  • Click the Start button on the lower left hand corner of your computer.
  • Select and click "Control Panel" from the Start menu.
  • When the Control Panel window opens, double-click on "Add or Remove Programs".
  • Find POP! in the alphabetized list of all programs on your computer.
  • Click POP! to select it.
  • Click the POP! Change/Remove button.
  • Click Yes in the window that opens asking you to confirm that you want to uninstall POP!
  • Restart your computer to complete the uninstallation process.
Scanning With Ad-Aware SE:

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window.

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window.

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’.

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.

Download the free trojan scanner A2 Squared, update and run a scan with it. Fix anything found then reboot when completed.

Please update to HijackThis 1.99.1.
  • Open HijackThis and click config.. < Misc. Tools and click Check for Update Online.
  • Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Thanks Alan, I will get busy with this over the next few days. First job is to find out who, if anyone, registered with People on Page. I can ask the rest of my family, but I'm not sure I'll question my neighbour who gave me the PC! Thanks for the response, your help is greatly appreciated. :)

You have People OnPage on your computer. If you registered with People OnPage, you'll need to unregister before removing it.

Note that if nobody has registered with People OnPage than just skip to To remove People OnPage. :)
Hi Alan. it apears that POP files only exist in spybot recovery folders. Do you think I can delete those folders as it is some time since the spybot scans were done and everything important still works? I have been using Ad-aware but it does tend to hang when I'm deleting so I have deleted all the tracking cookies it found manually and am removing the other objects found in batches of about 50 which seems to work. I am getting error messages caused by msnappau which I understand is an MSN Messenger updater and there is usually a runtime error message too. I am posting from work and will post again when I have finally completed all the steps in your instructions. It is taking a lot of time because of all the crashes. My gut feeling is that it is the msnappau process that is causing them. ;-)
Had a lot of problems with the ad aware process falling over at the deleting stage. Got there in the end and have completed thr remaining steps. The wife says that Solitaire deals much faster now so we must be getting somewhere! :) This is the latest logfile after running A2 fixing and rebooting:

Thanks again
Step 1
I couldn't find any information on these files. Do you know what they are? Right click on the files and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

c:\windows\system\cooeeugb.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\APMANF\RROIBI.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RICI400.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REG1_QCX.EXE

If you still are unsure what these files are, please submit them to the following links for a scan. Post the results here.
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EvtHtm] c:\windows\system\evthtm.exe /nocomm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [glwjmgeb] c:\windows\system\glwjmgeb.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [¢‰¸ï0+¿ÔÇè]mú*àaîžiC:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\CADUDVXP.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

c:\windows\system\evthtm.exe << File Only
c:\windows\system\glwjmgeb.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\ISTsvc << Whole Folder

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the requested info on the files in step 1.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi, Thanks for the quick reply, I could have sworn I checked for replies on monday and have been busy with work since then. :( I can't find three of the files in Windows Explorer even thow it was showing hidden and system files. hijack this is still showing cooeeugb though. I don't know what any of them are but I have long suspected cooeeugb of being adware. here is the jotti scan of the one I did find. Strangely when I right clicked the file no version tab appeared, only general. I have got to do steps 2 and three now but wanted to get this typed. :) File: reg1_qcx.exe Status: INFECTED/MALWARE (Note: this file has been scanned before. Step 1
Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Extract the program to your desktop. We will use this later in the fix.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {016235BE-59D4-4CEB-ADD5-E2378282A1D9} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\CXTPLS\CXTPLS.DLL

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [aDv8RWemh] REG1_QCX.EXE
O4 - Startup: palstart.exe
O4 - User Startup: palstart.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
You will need to insert the username for the profile you are using in the place where it shows (your username here).

Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

c:\windows\system\cooeeugb.exe /install
C:\PROGRAM FILES\APMANF\RROIBI.EXE
c:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSYPX7.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REG1_QCX.EXE
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\palstart.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\(your username here)\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\palstart.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Step 5
After the computer reboots, scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Seems I *was* tempting fate, my personal settings failed to load at the next boot and I was left with just a cursor! Otherwise it has been fine but possibly a little slow. One thing, whenever I open Hijack this or a logfile, Netmeeting starts up.

Thanks for all your help it really feels like we're getting there now and I am learning a lot along the way :)
Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rm4U36S] MSYPX7.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi Alan,

Here is the latest logfile. The PCis behaving fine but Netmeeting is still associated with Hijack this for some reason but it's not really a problem. I did get one pop-up yesterday and it was on a known site that doesn't normally cause problems. Overall the PC is working quite well.

Thanks for your help.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

In Windows ME, you can go to do this as follows:

Open System properties in Control Panel.
Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.
Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then make sure the
Disable System Restore check box is checked. When you choose to disable system restore
you will get a message that it will erase all your previous restore points, and that is ok.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
