Hi, i'm thinking about upgrading my sony vaio desktop pcv-rs630g from XP to Vista, but im not sure if its possible bec. i went to the sony website and they mentioned that it is not preferable to change the OS of my model bec. it is not compatible so they did not make any support drivers for my model. thanks
I generally advise against upgrading computers to Vista. Vista is designed for today's newest and future hardware - it is not designed for hardware that was designed to run on a 6 year-old operating system.

And we should not blame Microsoft for that either as I quickly point out that user demand for XP to support older (legacy) hardware and software is what allowed the badguys to gain a foothold in their exploits. When XP was under development, legacy (and less and unsecure) hardware and software users/owners made it loud and clear they did not want to be forced to buy new hardware and pay for software upgrades, like they had to do when migrating to Windows95 from DOS. Microsoft really got clobbered over that, so MS, unwisely listened to their user base, weighed legacy support over security, and the badguys took advantage of that. And then Microsoft got clobbered for that too.

Those of us in, or following the IT industry trends back then may remember Microsoft long ago wanted to add firewall and anti-virus support to Windows and plug up access to all these deep kernel hooks. But what happened? Norton, McAfee, CA and others whined and cried to Congress and the EU complaining that MS was forcing them out of business. MS was forced to abandon those efforts and was forced to allow firewall, AV and other anti-malware makers access to the code, often exposing vulnerabilities.

So now Norton (Symantec), McAfee, CA, ZoneLabs (now Checkpoint, makers of ZoneAlarm) are all big rich companies and malware is everywhere. What good have all these anti-malware makers done??? Think about it - what incentive does Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc. have to rid the world of malware???

Now with Vista - actually, starting with XPSP2, WGA, Windows Anti-Spyware (later renamed to Windows Defender), Microsoft is correctly weighing security, and support for the latest hardware and software, over support for legacy products - and I applaud them for that!

Before folks complain that WGA has nothing to do with security, they are wrong. It is a commonly known fact that there are 10s (if not 100s) of millions of illegal copies of Windows in use around the world today. It is also a commonly known fact that many users (thieves) of stolen software refuse to keep their systems secure for fear of being detected when they connect. Badguys know this, love those people, and target those machines to compromise, then use against the rest of us.

Now, for computers less than 1 year old, new computers, and for folks upgrading their motherboard/CPU/RAM/Video card, I wholeheartedly recommend installing the more secure Vista. That said, personally, I would wait until Vista SP1 is released early next year.
