xp sp2 Windows installer 3.1 Kb893803 is in my add/remove panel. I read that it has a bug and to upgrade to v2. To install v2do I remove 3.1 first or just download v2? I read all I could at M.S. but it didn't elaborate about this question. I don't know if I can uninstall an update like the old one in question. The reason I ask is I could not remove adaware 20007 and the fix was to download the Windows script page. The bug in the installer caused the uninstall isue. I'm running fine but would like the latest installer if advisable. Thank you
Greetings Grampy Pete:

First things first!

You need to know which version you have already

To determine which version of Windows Installer is currently installed on the computer, follow these steps:

1. In Windows Explorer, locate the following file:
Msi.dll

This file is located in the Windows\System 32 folder.

2. Right-click Msi.dll, and then click Properties.

3. Click the Version tab. Note the file version number.• If the version number is 3.1.4000.1823, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v1) installed.
• If the version number is 3.1.4000.2435, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) installed

If you have version 2, there is nothing to do.

If you have version 1

You do not not have to uninstall. Just go and download and execute Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

It says its an update.

Kaz.
Hello I have pasted your directions in a folder for use, however, in Windows\System32 folder there is no file Msi.dll. I have win xp sp2 home.

I keep getting notifications from 'what the tech' and when I respond there is nopost or additional info. I had a thread runing with Kazoo but I have tried everything in the book to contact a forum moderator or anyone here to no avail. If you could please resond to our thread with an answer I would appreciate it. If not could you please terminate the notifications to me?
Thank you for your help.
Hi Grampy Pete, Go to "My Controls" - Subscriptions Click on "View Topics" - Remove the Checkmark/tick from any items that you wish to stop received notifications from. Click on "View Forums - Remove the Checkmark/tick from any items that you wish to stop received notifications from. Keep us posted with your progress. Did you get your originally posted problem resolved? Best Regards, Doug
Doug Thank you for your prompt reply. Issues: 1-I followed your instructions and on both the topics and forums pages, I assume I want instant notifications so I select that from the drop down bar and tick the box. [Please disregard my comment re: the two notifications with no content as they have stopped for whatever reason.] When I leave and return to the pages(topic + forum) ithey are defaulted back to 'unsubscribe'. I went to my email preferences etc and think I've set up things so if I send a post I will get a reply with info. But why does the box, even with my current topic, have 'unsubscribe'? Also I do not understand the function of the word 'with' next to each box. 2-No I have not heard from Kazoo/Kaz who I was exchanging posts with. Importantly is that I resolved the issue myself-altho the downlaoder file was not found in win explorer as Kaz said, I did a 'search', rt clicked each of the 4 entries and the #'s for the latest downloader was in one of them. That means I have the latest. My initial question is then resolved, but I would like to find out why noone ever responed to my replies and why #1 issue above exisits so I can learn how to use this forum accurately. I have navigated many forums but I have a problem here that I hope someone would be good enough to see me through to solving. Thank you for your time and cooperation. I will be trying to explore and learn till I hopefully hear from someone again.
Hello Grampy Pete, Glad you got your original problem sorted out. As to the matter of "subscription" to a topic for email notification… Your Control Panel - Subscriptions - Topics displays a list of the one or more topics that you may have subscribed to. The "unsubscribe" item is the first item in the drop-down menu. It's there at the top of the list, but not specifically a default. Unsubscribe No Email Notification Immediate Delayed Daily Weekly The fact that the Topic item appears in your Subscriptions - Topics (list) indicates that you are already "subscribed" to that Topic. The Drop-Down menu provides options to Unsubscribe and/or change the type of Notification. The phrase "with selected" means that the menu selection that you may select will be associated with topics that you have selected from the list by placing a checkmark/tick in the box next to the Topic Item in your list of subscribed Topics. You "probably" only have two items in your subscription list: "Live Chat" "Windows installer" (unless you have manually subscribed to other Topics.) The drop down action choice menu has "unsubscribe" as the top item, because that is the most frequent action that Members want to change to. Meaning,… The Member is presently subscribed to a topic or topics and now wishes to stop getting email notifications about any new posts in that topic, because they are no longer interested in the Topic. Therefore the Member would place a Checkmark/tick next to the Topic they wish to discontinue subscribing to, and then would press the "with selected" button to initiate the action "unsubscribe" – "with selected"………. will remove the Members subscription to the Topic. Let us know if you have any difficulty with the board controls.
