Internet Connectivity, Except For Internet Explorer.

working on a PC which appears to have internet connectivity. programs that connect for updates seem to be working (spybot, virus, etc.). But Internet Explorer is not .

I have connected using two different physical locations (friends house and mine). both are using a cable modem with a wireless router (PC is hard wired to router). PC is set for DHCP and getting an IP address, dns setting, etc. Now from a command prompt, can ping 192.168.1.1 (router homepage), www.google.com, etc., but not from within IE.

If I boot in safe mode with networking, IE now works.

Have run through the self-help:
ATF cleaner
Spybot
Ad-aware (ran it when first troubleshooting, did not know wasn't to run if using mcafee)
AVG (free version)

all are now clean.

Tried some selective startup options (disabling some), but still can't get to work. Have disabled McAfee's firewall on it's option page - still nothing. looked at linksys router config - okay (as before, other processes can access the internet).

tried rootkitrevealer but didn't see anything interesting. This is an HP Media Center PC.
