Spybot cannot clean THCash from my Windows 98 machine. Problems point to SYSUPD.EXE, but I cannot manually delete this file. Norton does not detect any virus issues. Any help with identifying problems in the following logfile would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Could you click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.
Performed all of the recommended steps (lot's of problems were found and cleaned by AdAware).

Here is a new HijackThis scan. Let me know if there is anything else I need to do.

Many thanks!

Joe

Hi Joe

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00D6A7E7-4A97-456f-848A-3B75BF7554D7} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0428FFC7-1931-45b7-95CB-3CBB919777E1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: myBar BHO - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\WINDOWS\AV.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE

Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\AV.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE

Reboot back into normal mode. Click here to get the latest version of Internet Explorer. Click here to make sure that you have the latest Critical Update patches for Windows. It's very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks.

Rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
Well … I fixed the specific line items in HijackThis, deleted the AV.EXE and SYSUPD.EXE files, installed the latest version of Internet Explorer, and applied all of the available Critical Update patches.

Following is the latest HijackThis scan. Hopefully, all looks good!

Joe

The PC is running like it should! Many thanks for your help! A donation is on the way … to help keep this great service available for others (and to show my appreciation for the help). Thanks again, Joe
