I am trying to re-establish system integrities and clean up past sins. CWShredder, SpySubtract, Spybot and Norton have been run in both active and safe modes. All finds have been cleaned. Below is a copy of the Hijackthis log. Could someone take a look and advise if any lurkers remain?

Thanks

Hello Mountaineer
Congratulations on the fine job cleaning your machine.

There is only one "fix" I would reccommend and even it is your option.

Please run Hijack This again and place check marks next to the following entries.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

You have Microsoft's Find Fast running on your PC and while a legitimate program, it is a resource hog. It is usually the cause of your computer getting really slow or even freezing for several seconds while it is indexing. Find fast neither finds things any better or faster than other Windows searches. You will notice system improvement by disabling this one. After fixing with Hijackthis, go into the FindFast icon in the Control Panel and choose the "Index \ Close and Stop" menu option.

Close all other windows and browsers, then click on "Fix Checked.
Then please REBOOT.

Please reboot into safe mode by tapping on F8 frequently, during Bootup.

Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Delete the following File(s)/Folder(s) in DARK while in Safe Mode.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE (Only if you choose to also fix with Hijack This above.)

Reboot into normal mode and enable hidden files.

I did not see Ad-Aware SE. Most consider it essential in todays environment.
Here is a link, and instructions for configuring. Also, a few links to other free programs that will go far in protecting your PC on the internet.

Just below is the newest Ad-Aware SE, get it and not the one farther below.
But it still needs to be updated, now and everytime before use.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Thank you Piatan, Will take your recommendation as this has also been a critical problem e.g. resources and speed. Will repost logs in the next 4 hours or so. Mountaineer.
Piatan,

I have taken your instructions on the "find fast" log. Here is the updated log scan. Much thanks for yours and the forums help.
