RandyB – Thanks for submirring your HijackThis log. It is being analyzed now, and a response should be available later today. Thanks daveai
RandyB – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log. Your system has a mass of infections, and this will take several steps to clean.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". OpenWindows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders” option, and un-check “Hide extensions for known file types” and “Hide protected operating system files” options. Then click the “Apply To All Folders” button.

Next, move your "HijackThis.exe" into a newly created folder (such as C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files are reliably saved. We're eventually going to cleean out the tempfiles as part of the fix.

Okay, you have the Peper Trojan (among other problems) and we'll tackle that first. It is a very stubborn infection which requires two different tools to remove. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

For the second tool:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Next, let's run a battery of general scans:
  • Download and run the latest version of Ad-Aware. Please see How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software.
  • Download and run the latest version of Spybot Search and Destroy. Please see How to use Spybot to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software, which may catch things that Ad-Aware misses.
  • Then, run the Housecall On-Line Virus Scan from Trend Micro, and clean any problems found.
  • Then, run the online trojan scan at: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and delete any problem it finds.
Now, let's take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Thanks a lot.

Mostly it went well. SpyBot is unable to remove the following:

Huntbar
DSO Expliot

RandyB – I see you online. I'm looking at the logfile now. Be back with a response later today or this evening. Good job so far :) daveai
RandyB – Thanks for sending your latest HJT log. Great job on the peperfix :) There are still numerous malware infections for us to work on, so we'll hit those next.

Also, do not worry about the DSO Exploit that Spybot reported, as it's a known reporting bug in that program. And we're going to take out Huntbar (Wintools) in this fix.

However, I do worry that your Internet Explorer is not uptodate on patches, therefore vulnerable to a number of malware attacks. It is most important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there. My recommendationis todo this first.

Then, ensure that Spybot S&D "Tea Timer" is not running for the duration of this fix. If it is, please exit the program now. Otherwise, it will interfere with the fixing process. See this link.

Now for the general clean up of your system:

1 – Download the newest version of CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom (1.59.1). Run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'.

2 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

3 – Click on "Start" => "Control Panel" => "Administrative Tools" => "Services". Look for a service called "Wintools for IE Service" => Double-click it to open, then click on the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled. Do not worry if the service is not listed.

4 – Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for any of the following: "WtoolsA.exe", "WToolsS.exe" and "WSup.exe". If you find any of the files, click on them, and then click End Process. Exit the Task Manager when done.

5 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

DealHelper.
mscman
POP!
TV Media
TV Media Display
MS T-Media Display

Web Search Toolbar
Win-Tools Easy Installer (may be multiples)
any other Wintools entry you see

6 – Now, open a command prompt by clicking on "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" and click on "OK". At the prompt, type regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" (Quotation marks must be typed in on the preceeding command) then press . Type exit to close the command prompt window.

7 – Run HijackThis, from its new location, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

If you set this option via Spybot S&D then leave it alone, otherwise have HJT fix it.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

7 – While still in safe mofe, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

c:\installer\id53.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll <– this file (may already be gone)
C:\WINDOWS\dealhlpr.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

C:\WINDOWS\dhbrwsr.exe <– this file

C:\Program Files\Toolbar\ <– this folder

C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\ <– this folder

9 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

10 – And, to prevent any remnants of the problems from hiding out in your restore files, please disable Windows System Restore, then reboot, then re-enable Windows System Restore by following the instructions at: "How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore"

11 – Then let's run the online trojan scan at: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and delete any problem it finds.

12 – And, the Housecall On-Line Virus Scan from Trend Micro, and clean any problems found.

Whew :) Now let's take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Way to go RandyB! You did a nice job on CWS, Wintools and the others :) Only TV Media remains.

Your Internet Explorer is still behind on patches, therefore vulnerable to a number of malware attacks. It would be a shame to lose all the work you have done by getting reinfected via an IE security hole for which the patch already exists.

The HJT logfile should report "MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)", but yours says, "MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)". Please do the update as soon as possible.

Now let's get that pesky TV Media once and for all :)

Again, ensure that Spybot S&D "Tea Timer" is not running for the duration of this fix. See this link for instructions.

1 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

TV Media
TV Media Display
MS T-Media Display

2 – Run HijackThis, from its new location, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll (file missing)

O2 - BHO: CExtension Object - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

3 – While still in safe mofe, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

C:\Program Files\TV Media\ <– this folder

4 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

Okay, now for another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks

No trace of TV Media when I tried to delete. Norton is giving notice that the system is infected with Bloodhound.w32.ep. Norton cannot fix it.

I updated Wiondows and am receiving a message that key windows files have been changed and that I need to insert the XP disk to restore the original files!! If I put the disk in it requires a full upgrade. Any thoughts?

Also, I need to renew my Symantec subscription any recommendations on which product to use?

Thanks again.

Thanks RandyB – In your next post, please tell me how your system is running. Are your original problems cleared up?

1 – TV Media. The only entry that mentions it is The R3:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll (file missing)

and, the file is missing, so the malware is dead. Go ahead and attempt to delete just that R3 entry with HJT.

2 – I'm not sure about the windows update problem at all. What is the message and when do you recieve it? I'll ask some of the experts.

Meanwhile, your copy of Internet Explorer is not uptodate and that puts you at risk. It might be easier to download the latest version IE 6 from Microsf.

It might also be worth checking out Mozilla Firefox, which is a fine browser that does not have the IE security issues.

Meanwhile, while we are working our way through some of these details, please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – Consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
