 Just like the previous poster, I too am having trouble with a Trojan w.32.looksky virus with Ultimate Cleaner and Ultimate defender. :rant2: I'm not sure how I got infected, but I have used AVG, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Blaster, and Spybot to try to get rid of this thing. They always come up with stuff which I then remove, but the virus comes back again within minutes or hours. I get informed in a windows window that my computer has been infected with the Trojan w.32.Looksky virus and even if I click "No, " I get taken to Ultimate Cleaner website. If I click "Cancel" on the window that pops up and close out UCleaner", then I get taken to "Ultimate Defender." When I look into tools to change back to my own default website, the address in the default web browser is "www.softwarereferral.com." Then I get the red screen with the red hazard symbol which is actually covering up my desktop wallpaper. If I don't close it, and click on anything, then it takes me to UCleaner. As per your "Smitfraud" instructions, I downloaded "Smitfraud Fix" . lwriter,

Welcome to the forum. I need to see the entire HJT log including the header. I prefer you use the new version by Trendmicro so go to where you have HJT installed and remove it.

Download and install Trendmicros Hijackthis
Download the Trendmicro Hijackthis Installer, follow defauts and it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis and this is exactly where we want it to be.
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You said you downloaded Smitfraud fix, lets make sure you downloaded the correct one, do this.

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Let me see the Smifraud log and a new Complete HJT log please
Dear Ken,

Thanks so much for helping me with this problem! I am what I call a computer cannibal - I know enough to use a computer, but this stuff is way out of my league! I so appreciate that you do this as a volunteer! It makes the internet a better place to have "cops" like you guys helping to rout out the bad guys!

You do have an infection related to Smitfaud, so lets run the fix, you may have some other nasties also so lets do this.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Re read my previous post about renaming HJT and post a new Log with it renamed please
Dear Ken,

Here is my most recent hijack log. I renamed the icon as well as went into My Computer in the tree and renamed the Hijackthis application to flwriter.exe. When the log came up, it wanted to be be called hijackthislog.txt, so I saved it as flwriterlog.txt. I'm not sure if this is what you wanted or not - my computer skills are that of a user, so I don't have enough knowledge to do more than exactly what you tell me to do.

I also have some other questions:  do you want me to delete the logs I have saved and sent to you - Hijackthis logs and Smitfraud rapport logs?

Do I want to delete the following folders accessed through My Computer under Program files?

Invisus - old firewall that I cancelled and they uninstalled?
Big Fix/_Data file? Big fix was removed through add/remove programs?

Also, I have a popup from Anti Trojan Elite (part of Hijackthis?) which says "Cannot change Visible in OnShow or OnHide" and then gives me an error that I have to right click on to close.

I have pctools Registry Mechanic. When I ran it after uninstalling all the Java that you told me to do, the items it wanted to delete were Smitfraud program and Hijackthis program and logs. I did not do so. What do you want tme to do about this?

Again, thanks so much for your help! What should I have on my computer to protect it against future infection? I have the following: router for network of 3 computers, Spybot Search & Destroy (now), AVG 7.5, Spyware Blaster, and pc tools Spyware Doctor, Reigstry Mechanic, and I have just purchased an upgrade to Desktop Mechanic and Registry Mechanic. Thanks for helping! Back to you……..

 :wavey:
There is an infection going around that is written to evade a HJT scan so by renaming it , if that infection is present it will show up on your HJT log after its been renamed.

You just did it wrong.

* Click on My Computer
* Click on your C: Drive
* Click on the Program Files folder to open it.
* Click on the Trendmicro Folder to open it.
* Click on the Hijackthis folder to open it
* Once inside that folder, look for the HJT icon, looks like a man with a spyglass.
* Right click on it and a menu will open
* Click on Rename and type in Scanner.exe or flwriter.exe <–Whatever you like, just make sure it ends with .exe

Post a new log with it renamed.

You can delete the old logs if you wish, no harm done.

Invisus <– I don't see this on your log

After we are done I will give you links to free programs to help keep you more secure

Regarding Invisus - it is under My Computer, C: Drive, Program files just like Trendmicro. It is a 1.55 GB folder, and when I click on the folder, it has a filter.txt doc that is 1,589,411KB and an IDX file called filter.log.idx. Can I delete it since Invisus was uninstalled by them?

Also, my computer has frozen up a couple of times when I tried to go to Control Panel to Add/Remove programs and when I accessed Outlook Express. What do you recommend to handle this?

Thanks.

Invisus <– I don't see it on your Add Remove list so the folder in Program Files most likely has just leftovers after the uninstall . What I would do is delete that folder but keep it in your Recycle Bin for a few days and make sure there are no problems.

The rest of your log looks fine

Here are some free programs to install, these are must haves to help keep you secure
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give
you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help

Safe Surfn
